Evaluation of Adiponectin Levels in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus.

OBJECTIVES: To measure Plasma Adiponectin concentrations in patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus and compare with Plasma Adiponectin levels in Non Diabetic healthy controls.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study includes 60 Diabetic cases and 60 age and sex matched Non-Diabetic healthy controls.

OBSERVATION AND RESULTS: Adiponectin levels were significantly lower in 60 Diabetic patients (mean adiponectin levels=3.32±1.57 p<0.05) when compared to Non Diabetic controls (mean=10.36±3.73).Significant negative correlation was seen with FBS,PPBS,HbA1C and BMI.

CONCLUSION: The results show that adiponectin levels are lower in patients with Type2 Diabetes mellitus. This suggests that adiponectin may take part in the pathogenesis of Diabetis mellitus.
