OBJECTIVE: To review the pathophysiology of Fontan-associated liver disease, its histologic changes, and its radiologic manifestations. CONCLUSIONS: Fontan-associated liver disease is the result of a set of structural and functional changes in the liver that occur secondary to hemodynamic changes brought about by Fontan surgery. The radiologic manifestations of Fontan-associated liver disease consist of changes in the size and shape of the liver, alterations in the signal intensity or pattern of enhancement, abnormalities in the vascular structures, and focal lesions, which include benign nodules with intense uptake in the arterial phase and hepatocellular carcinoma...

Introduction: One of the most important risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is alcohol consumption: Studies in different populations suggest that the risk of liver disease could be associated with genetic variants of the enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, such as alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and cytochrome P450 CYP2E1. Objective: To identify and characterize the allelic variants of ADH1B, ADH1C and CYP2E1 genes in Colombian patients with cirrhosis and/or HCC. Materials and methods: We included samples from patients attending the hepatology unit between 2005-2007 and 2014-2016 of a hospital in Medellin...

Introduction: Despite the availability of an effective vaccine and treatment to reduce the viral load and progressive hepatocellular injury, approximately 240 million people worldwide are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). In Colombia, the circulation of different viral genotypes has been confirmed. Mutations in the genome have been associated to antiviral therapy resistance, viral escape to neutralizing antibodies, occult infection and progression to hepatocellular carcinoma. Objective: To identify the genotypes and the presence of mutations in the coding region of the surface (S) antigen and the reverse transcriptase (RT) domain of the polymerase of HBV obtained from serum samples for hepatitis B diagnosis received by the Instituto Nacional de Salud during the period 2002-2014...

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma is an aggressive malignant tumor with high lethality. AIM: To review diagnosis and management of hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: Literature review using web databases Medline/PubMed. RESULTS: Hepatocellular carcinoma is a common complication of hepatic cirrhosis. Chronic viral hepatitis B and C also constitute as risk factors for its development. In patients with cirrhosis, hepatocelular carcinoma usually rises upon malignant transformation of a dysplastic regenerative nodule...

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most frequent types of malignant tumors in the world. There is growing evidence of the relationship between it development and obesity. The mechanism that links obesity to cancer is still not fully understood; however, it is essential to the understanding the adipose tissue in metabolic changes related to obesity and hepatocellular carcinoma. BACKGROUND: The surgical tactics in cases of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and intra-abdominal malignancy are not uniform in the literature and are still a matter of debate. In this case report, we present a patient with coexisting AAA and primary liver cancer managed by simultaneous open AAA repair and liver resection After laparotomy and intraoperative liver ultrasonography that confirmed resectability of the tumor, aneurysm repair was performed with aorto-aortic tube grafting after interrenal cross-clamping Radiofrequency-assisted liver transection was performed to complete an anterior anatomic resection of liver segments VI and VII...

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent type of primary liver cancer and its incidence is increasing around the world in the last decades, making it the third cause of death by cancer in the world. Hepatic resection is one of the most effective treatments for HCC with five-year survival rates from 50-70%, especially for patients with a single nodule and preserved liver function. Some studies have shown a worse prognosis for HCC patients whose etiology is viral...

MAP1S (originally named C19ORF5) is a widely distributed homolog of neuronal-specific MAP1A and MAP1B, and bridges autophagic components with microtubules and mitochondria to affect autophagosomal biogenesis and degradation. Mitochondrion-associated protein LRPPRC functions as an inhibitor for autophagy initiation to protect mitochondria from autophagy degradation. MAP1S and LRPPRC interact with each other and may collaboratively regulate autophagy although the underlying mechanism is yet unknown. Previously, we have reported that LRPPRC levels serve as a prognosis marker of patients with prostate adenocarcinomas (PCA), and that patients with high LRPPRC levels survive a shorter period after surgery than those with low levels of LRPPRC...

Hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) are the most common causes of chronic liver disease. Due to shared routes of transmission, co-infection with HBV and HCV is not uncommon. Higher rates of cirrhosis and hepatocelular carcinoma have been demonstrated in HBV/HCV co-infected patients. No treatment standard has been established for HBV/HCV co-infected patients. Treatment decisions must be made based upon identification of the dominant virus, usually HCV, thus patients should receive pegylated interferon alpha with ribavirin as for HCV monoinfection...

HCV infection may result in serious health consequences such as chronic hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis and hepatocelulare carcinoma. In lodzkie voivodeship, the data from 2003- 2008 demonstrate a slight upward trend. In 2003 there were 280 registered cases (incidence 10.76 per 100 000). In the year 2008, a number of cases (199) and an incidence (7.8 per 100 000) of hepatitis C was lower than in prodecting years. Hepatitis C cases aged 15-19 constituted the most predominant group. As observed previously the incidence in the urban areas was two times higher than the incidence in rural areas and the incidence in men was twice higher than in women...

OBJECTIVE: To construct a retroviral vector carrying HBX gene and investigate its expression in LO2 human hepatocytes. METHODS: HBX gene was amplified by PCR and subcloned into the retroviral vector pSEB-Flag to construct a retroviral plasmid (pSEB-Flag-HBX) expressing HBX. The HBX gene insert was confirmed by restriction enzyme digestion, PCR and DNA sequencing. The recombinant retroviruses carrying HBX gene were generated in 293T cells co-transfected with pSEB-Flag-HBX and the packaging plasmids pAmpho, and used to infect LO2 human hepatocyte...
