UNLABELLED: Undifferentiated sarcoma of the liver is a rare primary tumor of childhood: only about 150 cases have been reported in the literature. CASE-REPORT: A 10 year-old girl was admitted because of diarrhea and weight loss. Sonography, then CT-scan and MRI showed a large tumor of the liver. COMMENTS: In the differential diagnosis of primary liver tumors in children, one should think about undifferentiated sarcoma of the liver, especially if imaging shows haemorrhagic foci and if sonography and CT/MRI display a discordant appearance...

BACKGROUND: Aggressive fibromatosis (AF) involving the mandible is rare, and surgery is often complicated by a high recurrence rate. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old boy was referred because of a fast growing painless mass which involved the entire left angle of the mandible. Excisional biopsy revealed AF, and local excision of the tumor was performed. Six months after surgery a recurrence was detected. The tumor was determined to be unresectable and the boy was treated with low-dose chemotherapy including methotrexate and vinblastine for 1 year...

UNLABELLED: Tumors diagnosed during the first month of life are infrequent: 0.5 to 2% of all childhood neoplasms. This is an interesting group of tumors because their type, relative incidence, natural history and response to treatment differ from those seen in older children. AIM: To contribute the experience of our institution in congenital tumors the last 13 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The records of all neonates (< 31 days old) diagnosed with solid tumors since January 1990 to December 2002 have been retrospectively reviewed...

The phenotypic expression of sickle cell anaemia varies greatly among patients and longitudinally in the same patient. It influences all aspects of the life of affected individuals including social interactions, intimate relationships, family relations, peer interactions, education, employment, spirituality and religiosity. The clinical manifestations of sickle cell anaemia are protean and fall into three major categories: anaemia and its sequelae;pain and related issues; andorgan failure including infection...

Malignant tumours of the salivary glands in children are extremely rare. We present here a 12-year-old girl initially diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma on fine needle aspiration biopsy, and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) after the lesion was excised and examined by histopathology. A wide resection of the lesion and bilateral supraomyohyoid neck dissection was performed. To our knowledge this is one of the youngest patients with ACC of the minor salivary glands. Due to its benign histological appearance, the biological agressiveness of ACC is usually underestimated...

In the present paper, we comment on the psychological and emotional disorders occurring after surgery. We surveyed 150 children that were admitted in several surgical units of our Children's Hospital. We used the Vernon's test in a questionaire. We reached a high level of comprehension. As a result, 121 valid questionaires were returned. The considerable amount of information was statistically studied with a computer, obtaining data on the following aspects: Filiation, frequency and percentage of every answer...

Bilaterality is uncommon in Wilms' tumor, being present in 4% to 8% of the cases. We report the combined experience of two children's hospitals in one city over a 20-year period. We encountered nine cases of synchronous bilateral nephroblastoma (National Wilms' Tumor Study 3, stage V). Age at diagnosis ranged from 9 to 41 months (mean 23 months). There were five girls and four boys. Associated findings include nephroblastomatosis in three cases (33%), one of which also had a familial history; undescended testis in two cases; and minor anomalies in two other cases...

The purpose of this article is to summarize those main indications where neuroleptics have been proven efficient in children. In some types of pathology (hyperactivity, conduct disorders, mental retardation with agressiveness...), their impact is purely symptomatic, generally sedative. In other cases (Tourette's syndrome, stuttering) they seem to have a more specific effect. Whichever may be the case, neuroleptics seem to be irremplaceable, whenever the symptoms become incapacitating such as when they hinder the person's social functioning and learning abilities...

A comparative analytical study was undertaken in 18 asthmatic children were incorporated in a physical rehabilitation program participating in swimming and physical exercises which lasted one year. During this time their parents also attended an informative course so that they could obtain a greater understanding of the illness and its treatment as well as their having received familial psychiatric evaluations which focussed on a better solution to the conflicts this illness presents. Significant changes were noted in the spirometrical results being those as noted FEV1 (p less than 0...

Straus, the author studies Anglo-Saxon research on subject, particularly that undertaken in the U.S.A. The study by Steele and Pollock on the psychology of parents of battered children has shown anomalies with an infantile characteristic in the psychology of some parents (apparently having no problems and living in easy circumstances, but demanding of their children a constant reassurance which the latter are unable to give, hence a permanent frustration leading to agressivity and actual tormenting...

Effects of sex-role standards on the expression of aggression were examined in a task requiring 40 boys and girls aged nine to 10 to take the role of boys or girls portrayed in a set of cartoon figures. Subjects were asked to respond to aggressive statements attributed to cartoon figures varying in sex. The expectation that subjects taking the role of male figures would display more antisocial aggression was confirmed. In addition, subjects gave more anti-social aggression responses for boys interacting with boys...

In this study the clinical features and response to therapy of 34 children, 4--10 years of age, and 54 adolescents, 11--20 years of age, were compared. The therapeutic response in patients in this series entered on a formal protocol was compared with nonstudy patients. The 2 age groups had similar sex ratios, characterized by male predominance, and age was not a determining factor in the extent of disease at diagnosis. By contrast, the distribution of histopathology varied between children and adolescents: mixed cellularity was most prevalent in the 4--10-year group (14/34), while nodular sclerosis predominated the older patients (23/55)...

The influence of negative, equal, and positive social comparison and of nonsocial comparison upon 4- and 5-year-old black children's subsequent aggressive and regressive behavior in 3-member groups was investigated. The group behavior of boys included more physical agression following negative social comparison than the other treatments, and their group behavior also consisted of more nonverbal teasing behavior following the negative comparison treatment than that of the equal and nonsocial comparison groups...

Ten boys with paratesticular embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma were treated in a 44-year period. Two prognostically distinct stages of the disease and appropriate treatments are described. Children with non-infiltrating tumors (stage IA) are curable (3 patients are alive and free of tumor after 8 to 44 years) and radical orchiectomy with adjunctive radiation or, preferably, chemotherapy is adequate for these patients. Conversely, in those children with infiltrative tumors retroperitoneal nodal metastases invariably develop...

The present paper is an abridged version of one written in 1974. Only one of several functions of small pets, viz. their social function, is discussed, both the positive and the negative aspects being considered. A test developed in Great Britain serves to show how important a pet may be. The reasons for which man regards his animals as important are more within the scope of the psychologist bus are also referred to in the paper. An entirely new social function, especially of dogs, is the role of therapeutic aids in the psychotherapy of children...

Psychological tests were carried out on 24 children with renal disease during the time they were hemodialyzed and after a minimum of one year after their transplant. These investigations included regular interviews with children and families, drawings and their commentaries, and projective techniques: Rohrschach tests. The results of these investigations indicated that the psychological status of the transplanted child could not be singled out and isolated from the effects of being ill, the different therapeutic procedures, and the personal history...

The report is concerned with a clinical study of 197 schizophrenic patients (children and adolescents) who attempted suicide. The study demonstrated that this form of behaviour may be observed even in a relatively favorable variant of the disease. Of certain importance in the development of a suicidal attempt may be psychotraumatizing factors. This may be reflected in the subjective motivation and a certain shade of the main processual symptoms. In relation to the syndrome level, suicidally important may be not only a depressive condition but other affective disorders, such as anxiety, perplexity, fears and a malicious-agressive affect...

72 pairs of kindergarten children were each given a brief play session involving an object with which only 1 child could play at a time. Facial expressions used by children defending their possession of the object were studied. Results showed a relationship between the facial expressions a child used and both his own subsequent behavior and that of his partner. "Agressive" facial expressions were associated with persistent attempts by the expressers to maintain access to the disputed object. Percipients of aggressive expressions were relatively hesitant about making a new attempt to take the object from the expresser...
