BACKGROUND: Cranial radiotherapy is standard of care for high-grade brain tumors and metastases; however, it induces debilitating neurocognitive impairments in cancer survivors, especially children. As the numbers of pediatric brain cancer survivors continue improving, the numbers of individuals developing life-long neurocognitive sequalae are consequently expected to rise. Yet, there are no established biomarkers estimating the degree of the irradiation-induced brain injury at completion of radiotherapy to predict the severity of the expected neurocognitive complications...

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), characterized by elevated blood pressure, high blood glucose, excess abdominal fat, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels, significantly increases the risk of various non-communicable diseases. This study focuses on understanding the sex-specific association between Apolipoprotein E (APOE) polymorphism and MetS among middle-aged and older adults in rural southern India. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Centre for Brain Research-Srinivaspura Aging, Neuro Senescence, and COGnition (CBR-SANSCOG) study...

OBJECTIVE: Vascular surgeons are often called upon to provide emergent surgical assistance to other specialties for iatrogenic complications, both intraoperatively and in the inpatient setting. The management of iatrogenic vascular injury remains a critical role of the vascular surgeon, especially in the context of the increasing adoption of percutaneous procedures by other specialties. This study aims to characterize consultation timing, management, and outcomes for iatrogenic vascular injuries...

BACKGROUND: Increasing incidence of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), overreported radiologic signs of intracranial hypertension, difficult access to outpatient neuro-ophthalmology services, poor insurance coverage, and medicolegal concerns have lowered the threshold for emergency department (ED) visits for "papilledema." Our objective was to examine referral patterns and outcomes of neuro-ophthalmology ED and inpatient consultations for concern for papilledema. METHODS: At one university-based quaternary care center, all adults referred for "papilledema" over one year underwent a standardized ED "papilledema protocol...

BACKGROUND: Intracranial epidermoid cysts are rare, benign tumors. Nevertheless, the microsurgical removal of these cysts is challenging. This is due to their capacity to adhere to the neuro-vascular tissue as well as the associated difficulties in micro-surgically peeling off their capsular wall hidden in dead angles. To better understand the rate of recurrence after surgical intervention, we have performed pre- and postoperative volumetric analysis of epidermoid cysts allowing the estimation of their growth rate after resection...

Incidental radiographic findings of an empty sella are prevalent in up to 35% of the general population. While empty sella was initially considered clinically insignificant, a subset of patients exhibits endocrine or neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations which are diagnostic of empty sella syndrome (ESS). Recent studies suggest that more patients are affected by ESS than previously recognized, necessitating a deeper understanding of this condition and an approach to evaluating and managing these patients. This comprehensive review addresses the etiologies and risk factors associated with primary and secondary empty sella, the radiological features that differentiate empty sella from other sellar lesions, and the role of clinical history and hormone testing in identifying patients with ESS...

A phenolphthalein-based Schiff base, 3,3-bis-{4-hydroxy-3-[(pyridine-2-ylmethylimino)-methyl]-phenyl}-3 H -isobenzofuran-1-one (PAP), has been synthesized and used for selective fluorescence 'turn on' and 'turn off' sensing of Zn2+ and PO4 3- respectively. The limit of detection using the 3 σ method for Zn2+ is found to be 19.3 nM and that for PO4 3- is 8.3 μM. The sensing mechanism of PAP for Zn2+ ions has been explained by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, TRPL, ESI-MS, FT-IR, and DFT based calculations. Taking advantage of this fluorescence 'on-off' behavior of PAP in the sequential presence of Zn2+ and PO4 3- a two input fuzzy logic (FL) operation has been constructed...

Platybasia is a developmental defect of the occipital bone and upper cervical spine resulting from anomalous development. The mechanism of such anomaly is not known however the most accepted theory includes abnormal basi-occiput development. It tends to produce marked pressure effects on the brain stem and cervical vertebrae. These pressure effects may present as signs similar to progressive spastic paralysis, cerebellar symptoms or cranial nerve palsy besides musculoskeletal symptoms. It is, therefore, crucial for physicians and radiologists to be familiar with clinical manifestations and radiological findings...

During inguinal adipose tissue (iWAT) ontogenesis, beige adipocytes spontaneously appear between postnatal 10 (P10) and P20 and their ablation impairs iWAT browning capacity in adulthood. Since maternal obesity has deleterious effects on offspring iWAT function, we aimed to investigate its effect in spontaneous iWAT browning in offspring. Female C57BL/6 J mice were fed a control or obesogenic diet six weeks before mating. Male and female offspring were euthanized at P10 and P20 or weaned at P21 and fed chow diet until P60...

Obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent in China and worldwide and is closely related to the development of hypertension. The pathophysiology of obesity-associated hypertension is complex, including an overactive sympathetic nervous system (SNS), activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), insulin resistance, hyperleptinemia, renal dysfunction, inflammatory responses, and endothelial function, which complicates treatment. Sodium-glucose cotransporter protein 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, novel hypoglycemic agents, have been shown to reduce body weight and blood pressure and may serve as potential novel agents for the treatment of obesity-associated hypertension...

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress refers to non-homeostatic elevation within intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and is associated with several neuro-related pathological conditions. Diclofenac is a commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for treating aches and pain by reducing inflammation. Diclofenac is also associated with the induction of apoptotic cell death by altering the homeostatic balance within mitochondria.
