PURPOSE: Lung cancer survivors have more psychosocial problems, including depression and anxiety disorder, than other cancer survivors. Lung cancer-specific symptoms, such as cough, dyspnea, or pain in chest, might increase FCR among survivors. We aimed to evaluate the association between lung cancer-specific symptoms and FCR among recurrence-free non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survivors. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Recurrence-free NSCLC survivors were recruited from January to October 2020 at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea...

Group B Streptococcus (GBS), also known as Streptococcus agalactiae , is a gram-negative, beta-hemolytic facultative anaerobe that causes neonatal pneumonia and sepsis. The neoplastic epithelial cells in adults, especially those of squamous origin, can show special adhesive properties toward GBS, which tends to reside within these tumors. There are some animal and human studies proving this association. Here, we present a 64-year-old female patient who had lung carcinoma of mixed adeno and squamous origin found to have persistent GBS every time the bronchoscopy was done for tumor ablation or cryotherapy...

BACKGROUND: Our previous study demonstrated that S100 calcium binding protein A6 (S100A6) impairs tumorigenesis by Calu-6 lung cancer cells, as well as inhibit their growth. However, the role that S100A6 plays in tumor cell differentiation has not been previously explored. This study aimed to confirm the effect of S100A6 on the direction of differentiation in the human lung cancer cell linem Calu-6m based on our previous published research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A S100A6-overexpressing lentiviral vector was successfully constructed in our previous study...

INTRODUCTION: Postpneumonectomy empyema (PPE) is a severe and often fatal complication of pneumonectomy, but some benefits of PPE were reported in patients who underwent either lobe or an entire lung resection due to lung cancer. AIM: To compare the survival outcomes of patients with non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), who developed PPE after pneumonectomy with uneventful recoveries available in our center's database. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Outcomes of 928 pneumonectomies performed due to NSCLC between 1995 and 2009 were evaluated...

BACKGROUND: In order to improve survival outcomes in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), strategies for neoadjuvant therapy need to be revisited. We evaluated and compared the efficacy of different neoadjuvant therapeutic modalities in a real-world setting. METHODS: A total of 258 patients with clinical stage IIA to IIIB NSCLC was included. All the patients underwent surgical resection after one to four cycles of neoadjuvant treatment consisting of chemotherapy (83), immunotherapy (23), and immunotherapy plus chemotherapy (152)...

CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old white male with a past medical history of smoking and stage IV small cell lung carcinoma presented with loss of vision and pain in the left eye. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts that contain more than 200 nucleotides. Despite their inability to code proteins, multiple studies have identified their important role in human cancer through different mechanisms. LncRNA lysyl oxidase like 1 antisense RNA 1 (LOXL1-AS1), a newly discovered lncRNA located on human chromosome 15q24.1, has recently been shown to be involved in the occurrence and progression of various malignancies, such as colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, prostate cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, glioma, thymic carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma...

Adoption of molecular testing in lung cancer is increasing. Molecular testing for staging and prediction of response for targeted therapy remain the main indications, and although utilization of blood-based testing for tumor is growing, the use of the diagnostic cytology and tissue specimens is equally important. The pathologist needs to optimize reflex testing, incorporate stage-based algorithms, and understand types of tests for timely and complete assessment in the majority of cases. When tissue is limited, testing should capture the most frequent alterations to maximize the yield of what are largely mutually exclusive alterations, avoiding the need for repeat biopsy...

Since US Food and Drug Administration approval of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) as the first companion diagnostic for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in non-small cell lung cancer, many patients have experienced increased overall survival. To improve selection of ICI responders versus nonresponders, microsatellite instability/mismatch repair deficiency (MSI/MMR) and tumor mutation burden (TMB) came into play. Clinical data show PD-L1, MSI/MMR, and TMB are independent predictive immunotherapy biomarkers...

Major pathologic response (MPR) and pathologic complete response (pCR) are increasingly being used in non-small cell lung carcinoma neoadjuvant clinical trials as an early endpoint of survival. MPR for all histologic types of lung cancer is ≤ 10% of viable tumor, while pCR requires no viable tumor. The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer multidisciplinary recommendation for the assessment of response in surgically resected lung carcinomas after neoadjuvant therapy was the first attempt to standardize grossing processing and microscopic evaluation...

This review summarizes the key morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular characteristics of sarcomas that are encountered in the lung and mediastinum. The tumor types discussed are synovial sarcoma, well-differentiated/dedifferentiated liposarcoma, myxoid pleomorphic liposarcoma, intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, Ewing sarcoma, and CIC-rearranged sarcoma...

Pulmonary salivary gland-type, although bear resemblance to their salivary gland counterparts, present a diagnostic challenge due to their rarity. Clinical features overlap with lung carcinoma; however, management strategies and outcomes are distinct. Onus falls on the pathologist to avoid misinterpretation of small biopsies especially in young, nonsmokers with slow growing or circumscribed endobronchial growths. A combination of cytokeratin, myoepithelial immunohistochemical markers, and identification of signature molecular alteration is invaluable in differentiation from lung cancers and subtyping the pulmonary salivary gland-type tumor...

Solitary pulmonary papillomas (SPPs) are rare lung neoplasms. Histologically, SPP is classified into three subtypes, and mixed squamous and glandular papilloma (MP) is the rarest subtype. Although SPPs are considered benign tumors, there have been several reports on the synchronous malignant transformation in SPPs. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important cell-to-cell communication mediators. This paper focuses on the regulatory role of tumor-derived EVs on macrophages. It aims to investigate the causes of tumor progression and therapeutic directions. Tumor-derived EVs can cause macrophages to shift to M1 or M2 phenotypes. This indicates they can alter the M1/M2 cell ratio and have pro-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. This paper discusses several key points: first, the factors that stimulate macrophage polarization and the cytokines released as a result; second, an overview of EVs and the methods used to isolate them; third, how EVs from various cancer cell sources, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung carcinoma, breast carcinoma, and glioblastoma cell sources carcinoma, promote tumor development by inducing M2 polarization in macrophages; and fourth, how EVs from breast carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, lungs carcinoma, and glioblastoma cell sources carcinoma also contribute to tumor development by promoting M2 polarization in macrophages...
