Wall paintings are integral to cultural heritage and offer rich insights into historical and religious beliefs. There exist various wall painting techniques that pose challenges in binder and pigment identification, especially in the case of egg/oil-based binders. GC-MS identification of lipidic binders relies routinely on parameters like the ratios of fatty acids within the plaster. However, the reliability of these ratios for binder identification is severely limited, as demonstrated in this manuscript. Therefore, a more reliable tool for effective differentiation between egg and oil binders based on a combination of diagnostic values, specific markers (cholesterol oxidation products), and PCA is presented in this study...

Although ligand-promoted photodissolution of ferrihydrite (FH) has long been known for low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), such as oxalate (Oxa) and malonate (Mal), photochemistry of coprecipitated FH with Oxa and Mal remains unknown, despite the importance of these mineral-organic associations in carbon retention has been acknowledged recently. In this study, ferrihydrite-LMWOAs associations (FLAs) were synthesized under circumneutral conditions. Photo-dissolution kinetics of FLAs were compared with those of adsorbed LMWOAs on FH surface and dissolved Fe-LMWOAs complexes through monitoring Fe(II) formation and organic carbon decay...

Polyesters from furandicarboxylic acid derivatives, i.e., dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (2,5-DMFDCA) and 2,4-DMFDCA, show interesting properties among bio-based polymers. Another potential heteroaromatic monomer, 3,4-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (3,4-BHMF), is often overlooked but holds promise for biopolymer synthesis. Cleaning and greening synthetic procedures, i.e., enzymatic polymerization, offer sustainable pathways. This study explores the Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB)-catalyzed copolymerization of 3,4-BHMF with furan dicarboxylate isomers and aliphatic diols...

Nonplanar porphyrins play crucial roles in many biological processes and chemical reactions as catalysts. The structures of the new compounds were confirmed by FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and HRMS. Then the inhibition effects of newly synthesized molecules on human erythrocyte hCA I and hCA II isoenzymes were investigated. Ki values of the compounds were in the range of 0.024-0.496 µM for hCA I and 0.006-5.441 µM for hCA II. Growing evidence suggests that exposure to certain metabolism-disrupting chemicals (MDCs), such as the phthalate plasticizer DEHP, might promote obesity in humans, contributing to the spread of this global health problem. Due to the restriction on the use of phthalates, there has been a shift to safer declared substitutes, including the plasticizer diisononyl-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH). Notwithstanding, recent studies suggest that the primary metabolite monoisononyl-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid ester (MINCH), induces differentiation of human adipocytes and affects enzyme levels of key metabolic pathways...

Polyurethane (PU) is the sixth most used plastic in the world. Because many PU derived materials are thermosets and the monomers are valuable, chemical recycling to recover the polyol component is the most viable pathway to utilizing postconsumer PU waste in a closed-loop fashion. Acidolysis is an effective method to recover polyol from PU waste. Previous studies of PU acidolysis rely on the use of dicarboxylic acid (DCA) in high temperature reactions (>200 °C) in the liquid phase and result in unwanted byproducts, high energy consumption, complex separations of excess organic acid, and an overall process that is difficult to scale up...
