IMPORTANCE: A response shift (RS) is a phenomenon in which there is an individual perceptual gap between pre and post assessments. RS effects were not considered in the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) development process. OBJECTIVE: To detect the effects of RS on the COPM. DESIGN: Convergent mixed-methods research. SETTING: Subacute rehabilitation hospital in Japan. PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen adult patients with a range of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions recruited from a subacute rehabilitation hospital...

PURPOSE: The emergence of large real-world clinical databases and tools to mine electronic medical records has allowed for an unprecedented look at large data sets with clinical and epidemiologic correlates. In clinical cancer genetics, real-world databases allow for the investigation of prevalence and effectiveness of prevention strategies and targeted treatments and for the identification of barriers to better outcomes. However, real-world data sets have inherent biases and problems (eg, selection bias, incomplete data, measurement error) that may hamper adequate analysis and affect statistical power...

The interpretation of clinical research evidence is still characterized by wide subjectivity. This subjectivity is also visible when comparing guidelines and recommendations developed by institutions and learned societies. It is often due to bias and conflicts of interest experienced by the members of guideline panels: thus, the role of editors and publishers of journals and scientific media becomes increasingly important, and they should return to careful oversight of the content of what is published. To address the problem, however, it is necessary to return to teaching evidence-based medicine in order to restore its function as a "North star" in clinical practice and public health decision-making...

There is a recent and growing interest in assessing differential responders to resistance training (RT) for diverse outcomes. Thus, the individual ability to respond to an intervention for a specific measurement, called responsiveness, remains to be better understood. Thus, the current study aimed to summarize the available information about the effects of RT on functional performance and muscle strength, power, and size in healthy adults, through the prevalence rate in different responsiveness classifications models...

Modern automated laboratory haematology analysers use various methods to measure different haematological parameters. These parameters are useful in the diagnostic and clinical interpretation of patient symptoms. So, it is very important to compare the performance of different analysers measuring the same parameter. Hence, a comparison of complete blood counts analysed by Sysmex XN 3000 and Horiba Yumizen H2500 was performed. Total 296 EDTA anti-coagulated blood samples were processed in both the analysers in duplicate within 4 h of collection...

OBJECTIVE: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) require valid reference limits for meaningful interpretation. We aimed to further develop the extrapolated norms (e-norms) method for obtaining NCS reference limits from historical laboratory datasets for children and adults, and to validate it against traditionally derived reference limits. METHODS: We compared reference limits obtained by applying a further developed e-norms with reference limits from healthy controls for the age strata's 9-18, 20-44 and 45-60 years old...

Collagen fibers in the 3D tumor microenvironment (TME) exhibit complex alignment landscapes that are critical in directing cell migration through a process called contact guidance. Previous in vitro work studying this phenomenon has focused on quantifying cell responses in uniformly aligned environments. However, the TME also features short-range gradients in fiber alignment that result from cell-induced traction forces. Although the influence of graded biophysical taxis cues is well established, cell responses to physiological alignment gradients remain largely unexplored...

Doctors are well-trained in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of individual stool or urine sample data; however, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) combines the excretion of many community members into an anonymous health sample tied to a geographic location. We advocate for the inclusion of WBE in medical education. WBE offers physicians an opportunity to better care for patients with diseases seen at health clinics and doctors' offices, customize and inform treatment, and accept positive results as true positives, backed by the contextual information provided by wastewater findings...

Fluorescence is used in various biological assays due to its high sensitivity, versatility, and precision. In recent years, studies using medicinal plant extracts have increased. However, fluorescence-based assays could be biased by plant metabolites autofluorescence. To address this issue, this study investigated the interference caused by methanolic extracts and chloroform fractions of three medicinal plants in three fluorescence-based assays on gastric cancer stem cells(CSC): resazurin reduction, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry...

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical imaging requires careful evaluation of machine-learning algorithms. We propose the use of a "deep virtual clinical trial" (DeepVCT) method to effectively evaluate the performance of AI algorithms. In this paper, DeepVCTs have been proposed to elucidate limitations of AI applications and predictions of clinical outcomes, avoiding biases in study designs. The DeepVCT method was used to evaluate the performance of nnU-Net models in assessing volumetric breast density (VBD) from digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) images...

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) thresholds are used as eligibility criteria to reduce complication risk in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). This approach oversimplifies preoperative risk assessment and inadvertently restricts access to effective surgical treatment for osteoarthritis. A prior survey of orthopaedic surgeons in the United States identified complex underlying factors that influence BMI considerations. To understand whether similar factors exist and influence surgeons in a different health-care system setting, we investigated Canadian surgeons' views and use of BMI criterion thresholds for TJA access...

Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients experience sleeping disorders in addition to the disease-defining symptomology of movement dysfunctions. The prevalence of PD is sex-based and presence of sleeping disorders in PD also shows sex bias with a stronger phenotype in males. In addition to loss of dopamine-containing neurons in the striatum, arousal-related, orexin-containing neurons in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) are lost in PD, which could contribute to state-related disorders. As orexin has been shown to be involved in sleeping disorders and to have neuroprotective effects, we asked whether orexin could protect sleep-related LH neurons from damage putatively from the protein α-synuclein (α-syn), which is found at high levels in the PD brain and that we have shown is associated with putatively excitotoxic rises in intracellular calcium in brainstem sleep-controlling nuclei, especially in males...

Previous studies have explored cognitive disabilities experienced by autistic children between the ages of 2 and 5 who attend special schools. However, there is still debate regarding the onset, scope, and causes of these problems, particularly when considering incarnate biases that may arise from affective notions. Early affective issues could potentially be a key factor contributing to observing such biases in picture captions. In this study, we employed an affective approach-simultaneous observation and questionnaire-to investigate how incarnate biases impact picture caption activities...
