OBJECTIVES: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is the leading hospital-acquired infection in North America. We have previously discovered that antibiotic disruption of the gut microbiota decreases intestinal IL-33 and IL-25 and increases susceptibility to CDI. We further found that IL-33 promotes protection through type 2 Innate Lymphoid Cells (ILC2s), which produce IL-13. However, the contribution of IL-13 to disease has never been explored. METHODS: We used a validated model of CDI in mice, in which we neutralized via blocking antibodies, or administered recombinant protein, IL-13 to assess the role of this cytokine during infection using weight and clinical scores...

The rate of pH decline, early post-mortem, has been identified as a key factor that impacts the tenderness of meat, and manipulating this rate of pH decline is highly relevant to ensure consistent high quality meat. Ultrasound is a potential intervention in early post - mortem muscle that may have an impact on the rate of glycolysis through its ability to alter enzyme activity. Following a variety of different ultrasound treatments frequencies (25 and 45 kHz) and durations (15, 30 and 45 min), it was found, when analysed in muscle, that ultrasound treatment duration, specifically the 30 min treatment, and interaction between treatment duration and frequency, had a significant impact on the rate of pH decline, post - treatment...

BACKGROUND: Advanced practice physiotherapy (APP) models of care have shown success in access, safety, satisfaction, and care quality for musculoskeletal pain conditions in various settings. Yet, there is a gap in defining competencies for physiotherapists to be the initial point of contact for people with chronic pain. This study aims to identify and agree upon the competencies necessary for a physiotherapist to fulfill the role of an APP in an interprofessional chronic pain clinic. METHODS: Three focus groups were conducted using a Nominal Group Technique and a modified Delphi process...

Microbiome of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) has been identified as one of the crucial factors influencing the health and condition of domestic animals. The global poultry industry faces the challenge of understanding the complex relationship between gut microbiota composition and performance-related traits in birds. Considerable variation exists in the results of correlational studies using either 16S rRNA profiling or metagenomics to identify bacterial taxa associated with performance, productivity, or condition in poultry (e...

We report the experimental measurement of millijoule terahertz (THz) radiation emitted in the backward direction from laser wakefields driven by a femtosecond laser pulse of few joules interacting with a gas target. By utilizing frequency-resolved energy measurement, it is found that the THz spectrum exhibits two peaks located at about 4.5 and 9.0 THz, respectively. In particular, the high frequency component emerges when the drive laser energy exceeds 1.26 J, at which electron acceleration in the forward direction is detected simultaneously...

Optical box traps offer new possibilities for quantum-gas experiments. Building on their exquisite spatial and temporal control, we propose to engineer system-reservoir configurations using box traps, in view of preparing and manipulating topological atomic states in optical lattices. First, we consider the injection of particles from the reservoir to the system: this scenario is shown to be particularly well suited to activating energy-selective chiral edge currents, but also to prepare fractional Chern insulating ground states...

Utilizing the manipulation of perovskite dimensions has been proven as an effective approach in regulating perovskite properties. Nevertheless, achieving precise control over the dimensions of perovskites within the same system poses a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce a sophisticated method to attain precise dimensional control in metal-free perovskites (MFPs), specifically through the process of octahedron tailoring by compositional engineering. Accordingly, we successfully instigated a transition from HPIP-NH4 I3 ⋅H2 O (3D), HPIP2 -NH4 I5 (2D) and HPIP3 -NH4 I7 (1D) structures...

A 111 bp ribozyme cassette, consisting of the N79 ribozyme surrounded by insulating spacer sequences, was inserted into four independent long noncoding RNA genes as well as the male-specific splice variant of doublesex using scarless CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing...

However, it is unknown if these limits or the underlying contributions of different chloroplastic Pi transporters vary throughout the photoperiod or between chloroplasts in different leaf tissues. To address these questions, we applied live Pi imaging to Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) wild-type plants and two loss-of-function transporter mutants: triose phosphate/phosphate translocator (tpt), phosphate transporter 2; 1 (pht2; 1), and tpt pht2; 1...

However, the precise mechanism underlying the nitrate inhibition of nodulation in soybean remains elusive. In this study, CRISPR-Cas9-mediated knockout of GmNLP1 and GmNLP4 unveiled a notable nitrate-tolerant nodulation phenotype. The regulation of seed development is critical for determining crop yield. Auxins are vital phytohormones that play roles in various aspects of plant growth and development. However, its role in amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism in seeds is not fully understood. In this study, we identified a mutant with small seeds through forward genetic screening in Medicago truncatula. The mutated gene encodes MtPIN4, an ortholog of PIN1. Using molecular approaches and integrative omics analyses, we discovered that auxin and amino acid content significantly decreased in mtpin4 seeds, highlighting the role of MtPIN4-mediated auxin distribution in amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism...

Intraventricular tumors of the lateral and third ventricles are relatively rare, accounting for 1-2% of all primary brain tumors in most large series [1-4]. They can be uniquely challenging to approach due to their deep location, propensity to become large before they are discovered, and association with hydrocephalus [5, 6]. The surgeon's goal is to develop a route to these deep lesions that will cause the least morbidity, provide adequate working space, and achieve a complete resection. This must be performed with minimal manipulation of the neural structures encircling the ventricles, avoiding functional cortical areas, and acquiring early control of feeding vessels [7, 8]...
