OBJECTIVE: The idea of this article is to propose to the general use of a new term to semiologically describe musculoskeletal wrist pain. FINDINGS: The use of terms with Greco-Latin roots is common in the medical field. The result is expressed in the newly coined word (neologism) "carpalgia", defined as musculoskeletal pain in the region of the wrist. CONCLUSIONS: The use of other terms related to musculoskeletal pain of the shoulder (omalgia), knee (gonalgia), metatarsus (metatarsalgia), spine (cervicalgia, lumbalgia), or hip (coxalgia) terms have demonstrated their importance through their applicability in different medical journals in recent years...

The authors considered topics of occupational and general comorbidity of occupational lumbosacral radiculopathy in coal miners (2791 examinees) observed over 1976-2014 in occupational center. In patients having lumbosacral radiculopathy without occupational mixed diseases, the occupational disease was diagnosed at the age 3-5 years younger, and 2-4 years earlier from primary visit. Analysis of occurrence of general comorbid conditions with lumbosacral radiculopathy revealed some regularities: patients manifested with symptoms due to vibration have more frequent arterial hypertension than in those with lumbalgia, whereas in risk group of hearing affected by noise IHD was more possible...

A 68-year-old female presented with inflammatory lumbalgia and cruralgia. Physical examination revealed a lumbar stiffness without neurological deficit. Secondarily, paraplegia and urinary retention appeared. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a vertebral compaction of L3 vertebra with medullar compression. Emergent surgery revealed an epidural tumor involving largely the L3 vertebral body. Histology found schwannoma with positive protein S100 on the immunohistochemical study. Metastasis screening revealed bilateral nodular lesions of the lungs and a trochanter high scintigraphic signal...

Thermoesthesia-and-algesthesia disorders have been registered in the dermatomes of cauda equina roots of patients with lumbar spine osteochondrosis in all the cases. Negative changes in the sensitivity of this type are manifested themselves as follows: 1) 2-8-degree increases of thresholds; 2) 3-6-degree decreases of thresholds; 3) absence of thermal sense. In the presence of reflex syndromes (lumbalgia and lumbar ischialgia) the disorders in L4, L5, S1 dermatomes have been determined to the greatest degree...

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Both the range of motion and load transfer of the sacroiliac (SI) joint improve considerably after lumbar spine surgery. When, following surgery, SI joint pain develops in spite of appropriate physical therapy, injection of an anaesthetic with added corticosteroid into the SI joint is a first choice treatment. The aim of this presentation is to provide information on our experience with this therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-four patients after lumbar spine fusion reported lumbalgia different form pain before surgery...

Salivary ductcarcinoma (SDC)is a high-grade malignant tumor arising predominantly in the parotid gland. Androgen receptor(AR)expression was mainly restricted to SDC in salivary cancer. We report successful treatment of a patient with advanced SDC using an endocrine chemotherapy. A 76-year-old man was hospitalized with lumbalgia and swelling of left submandibular region. Radiological examination indicated a tumor in left submandibular gland and metastatic tumors in lumbar vertebra, accompanied by swollen lymph nodes of the neck, mediastinum...

Pain is also the main symptom of spinal diseases in children. The younger the child, the more frequently organic causes are to be found, whereas in adolescents functional dorsalgia and lumbalgia are ubiquitous. Apart from the neonatal period, where ultrasound is used as the primary method for investigation of closed spinal dysraphia, radiography is still considered to be the first choice examination, which nevertheless should only be carried out after a thorough anamnesis and clinical examination. For targeted follow-up and especially exclusion of neoplasms, MRI is the method of choice in most cases...

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral hemilaminotomy (ULH) and/or bilateral hemilaminotomy (BLH) with limited facetectomy are defined approaches to decompress the thecal sac and exiting lumbar nerve roots without increasing the risk of subsequent spinal instability. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 18 cases with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) with BLH or ULH that was performed in 11 and 7 cases, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed at the follow-up examination and dural sac area (DSA) was calculated on T(2)-weighted MRI images and then compared statistically...

Immunocompromised patients are at high risk of secondary infection associated with high morbidity. In children these complications include fungal osteomyelitis due to continuous infiltration or hematogenous spread. The case of a 4-year-old boy is presented who developed lumbalgia and thigh pain during ongoing chemotherapy for acute lymphatic leukemia. MRI revealed infarct-like lesions in the femur and L5 vertebra, which were biopsied. The histologic diagnosis was consistent with angioinvasive aspergillosis...

INTRODUCTION: Various clinical conditions can cause low back pain, and in most cases it is of a degenerative origin. Degenerative disc disease is a common condition which affects young to middle-aged men and women equally. Changes in the mechanical properties of the disc lead to degenerative arthritis in the intervertebral joints, osteophytes, and narrowing the intervertebral foramen or the spinal canal. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: Degenerative cascade, described by Kirkaldy-Willis, is the widely accepted pathophysiologic model describing the degenerative process as it affects the lumbar spine in 3 phases...

INTRODUCTION: The lateral approach is classically used for surgical treatment of extraforminal disc herniations (EDH). However, its use at the level of the L5-S1 space can require more or less extensive resection of the facet joint. This study reports our experience in the treatment of L5-S1 EDH using the transsacral approach described by Muller and Reulen in 1998. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From February 2002 to October 2004, 12 patients presenting EDH at the L5-S1 level underwent treatment using the transsacral approach...
