Carbon nanodots (CDs) are commonly found in food products and have attracted significant attention from food scientists. There is a high probability of CD exposure in humans, but its impacts on health are unclear. Therefore, health effects associated with CD consumption should be investigated. In this study, we attempted to create a model system of the Maillard reaction between cystine and glucose using a simple cooking approach. The CDs (CG-CDs) were isolated from cystine-glucose-based Maillard reaction products and characterized using fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM)...

The aim of this study was to investigate how dietary modifications with pomegranate seed oil (PSO) and bitter melon aqueous extract (BME) affect mineral content in the spleen of rats both under normal physiological conditions and with coexisting mammary tumorigenesis. The diet of Sprague-Dawley female rats was supplemented either with PSO or with BME, or with a combination for 21 weeks. A chemical carcinogen (7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene) was applied intragastrically to induce mammary tumors. In the spleen of rats, the selected elements were determined with a quadrupole mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma ionization (ICP-MS)...

The aim of the study was to compare the content of major components, selected elements and heavy metals in the fillet, spine and bones of a carp ( Cyprinus carpio ). Moreover, the extent to which a prepared portion of carp tissue (100 g of fillet and 10 g of carp spine or bones) met the requirements for analyzed elements in adults (women and men) and children was calculated. The proximate composition (total protein, total lipid, ash, moisture) and mineral content of the fish samples were determined. The nutrient composition presented fluctuations among the different tissues...

Background/Objectives : The IWATE criteria are well-established as a helpful tool to preoperatively estimate the difficulty and perioperative outcome of laparoscopic liver resections. We evaluated the relationship between the IWATE criteria and the perioperative outcomes in robotic-assisted liver resections (RARLs). Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the data of 58 patients who underwent robotic-assisted liver surgery at our center between July 2019 and April 2023. The operative difficulty of every patient was graded according to the IWATE criteria and compared to the perioperative outcome...

Background : Corticosteroids used to induce a response in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) may cause adverse reactions. The DICE study aimed to quantify and investigate factors associated with their use. Methods : This cross-sectional, non-interventional study conducted in seven countries allowed us to collect data on oral corticosteroid exposure and excessive use (cf. British Society of Gastroenterology) over the past 12 months in adult patients with CD or UC for more than a year. The factors associated with these practices were investigated using marginal logistic models...

Recurrent headaches, encompassing migraine and tension-type headaches, represent prevalent conditions affecting individuals across different age groups, exerting a substantial influence on daily functioning and quality of life. Headaches serve as common manifestations of underlying health issues. Among these, celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder activated by gluten consumption, has emerged as a noteworthy concern. Recent research indicates a correlation between celiac disease and heightened susceptibility to headaches, particularly migraines...

This study investigates the adsorption of cadmium (Cd) by red mud-loess mixed materials and assesses the influence of quartz sand content on permeability. Shear tests are conducted using various pore solutions to analyze shear strength parameters. The research validates solidification methods for cadmium-contaminated soils and utilizes SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRD analysis to elucidate remediation mechanisms. The findings suggest that the quartz sand content crucially affects the permeability of fine-grained red mud-loess mixtures...

Using a microscopic model and Green's function theory, we calculated the magnetization and band-gap energy in ion-doped Li M PO4 (L M PO), where M = Fe, Ni, Co, Mn. Ion doping, such as with Nb, Ti, or Al ions at the Li site, induces weak ferromagnetism in LiFePO4 . Substituting Li with ions of a smaller radius, such as Nb, Ti, or Al, creates compressive strain, resulting in increased exchange interaction constants and a decreased band-gap energy, Eg, in the doped material. Notably, Nb ion doping at the Fe site leads to a more pronounced decrease in Eg compared to doping at the Li site, potentially enhancing conductivity...

A robust "on-off" fluorescent aptasensor was developed using nanohybrids of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2 ) quantum dot (QD)-doped zinc metal-organic frameworks (Zn-MOF) for selective and sensitive detection of cadmium ions (Cd2+ ) in water. This nanohybrid (MoS2 @Zn-MOF), synthesized via "bottle around the ship" methodology, exhibited a high-intensity fluorescence emission centered at 430 nm (λEm ) (blue) on excitation at 320 nm (λEx ). Further, the conjugation of this fluorophore to phosphate-modified cadmium aptamer (Cd-2-2) was achieved through carbodiimide reaction...

BACKGROUND: Structured reporting (SR) replaced narrative (free text) reporting and utilizes templated headings and subheadings with findings typically based on the anatomy included in the examination. Its use has been widely advocated by radiology and non-radiology organizations as the new reporting standard. There are, however, shortcomings to SR, such as templated text not addressing a specific clinical indication. Contextual reporting (CR) fills this gap. CR is a type of SR which is tailored to a narrow clinical indication by including pertinent positive and negative findings for that specific clinical entity...
