AIMS: Previous small-scale studies have indicated a short-term stroke incidence of 1.0-1.3% following Takotsubo (syndrome). In this nationwide register-based study, we investigated the 90-day risk of ischemic stroke (IS) or transient ischemia attack (TIA) and mortality of patients with Takotsubo. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with incident Takotsubo between January 1st 2009 to September 30th 2018 were identified from Danish nationwide registries. Takotsubo patients were age- and sex-matched with background-, atrial fibrillation/flutter- (AF) and myocardial infarction (MI) cohorts...

The risk of recurrence in takotsubo syndrome (TTS) appears to be low, although previous studies have shown conflicting results and factors associated with recurrences are unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence and predictors of TTS recurrences. Adult patients included in the Spanish Multicenter REgistry of TAKOtsubo syndrome (RETAKO) between January 2003 and September 2019 were identified. Patients were categorized based on recurrences during follow-up and a multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with recurrences...

Awareness of gender differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) has increased: both the different impact of traditional cardiovascular risk factors on women and the existence of sex-specific risk factors have been demonstrated. Therefore, it is essential to recognize typical aspects of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in women, who usually show a lower prevalence of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) as a cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It is also important to know how to recognize pathologies that can cause acute chest pain with a higher incidence in women, such as spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA)...

AIMS: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is associated with a substantial rate of adverse events. We sought to design a machine-learning (ML) based model to predict the risk of in-hospital death and to perform a clustering of TTS patients to identify different risk profiles. METHODS AND RESULTS: A Ridge Logistic Regression-based ML model for predicting in-hospital death was developed on 3482 TTS patients from the International Takotsubo Registry, randomly split in a train and an internal validation cohort (75% and 25% of the sample size, respectively) and evaluated in an external validation cohort (1037 patients)...

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in women of reproductive age is uncommon; however, the risk of AMI increases four to five-fold during pregnancy as compared to non-pregnant women of similar age. In the period following childbirth, the incidence of AMI is often attributed to a range of factors. These factors encompass coronary vessel dissection related to atherosclerosis, thrombosis, coronary spasm, and, in rare cases, takotsubo cardiomyopathy. The physiological alterations that accompany pregnancy induce a state of heightened coagulation, thereby elevating the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in women...

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy has an incidence of 1% of acute coronary syndrome in the adult population, and the risk of recurrence is approximately 1.5% per year. However, only a few cases have been reported in children. Having a neurologic disorder and being exposed to the same trigger repeatedly have been associated with an increased risk.

Stress-induced cardiomyopathy presents like acute coronary syndrome and is triggered by emotional stress or critical illness. Increased incidence has been reported during the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters. We describe a case of stress-induced cardiomyopathy as an indirect consequence of the Russia-Ukraine war. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health issue because of its increasing incidence and the substantial short-term and long-term burden it imposes. This burden includes high mortality rates, morbidity, and a significant impact on productivity and quality of life for survivors. During the management of TBI, extracranial complications commonly arise during the patient's stay in the intensive care unit. These complications can have an impact on both mortality and the neurological outcome of patients with TBI...

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (TTC) is characterized by reversible left ventricular apical ballooning in the absence of angiographically significant coronary artery disease. While TTC is usually preceded by an emotionally stressful event, physical trauma has been documented as a precipitating incident as well. CASE SUMMARY: An 82-year-old female with no past medical history, presented to the emergency department following a motor vehicle collision. Trauma workup was significant for an ulnar fracture, elevated cardiac enzymes, and ST-segment changes...

We sought to clarify the incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after the initiation of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). We analyzed the JMDC Claims Database between 2005 and 2021. The study included 2972 patients with no history of cardiovascular disease and a prescription for an ICI. The primary outcome was the incidence of MACE, including myocarditis, pericarditis, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, atrio-ventricular block, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke. The median age of study participants was 59 (Q1-Q3 53-65) years, and 2163 participants (72...

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is an immune-mediated complication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Cardiovascular system is commonly involved. Acute heart failure (AHF) is the most severe complication of MIS-C, leading to cardiogenic shock. The aim of the study was to characterise the course of MIS-C with a focus on cardiovascular involvement, based on echocardiographic (echo) evaluation, in 498 children (median age 8.3 years, 63% boys) hospitalised in 50 cities in Poland...

Stress is an important risk factor for modern chronic diseases, with distinct influences in males and females. The sex specificity of the mammalian stress response contributes to the sex-dependent development and impacts of coronary artery disease (CAD). Compared to men, women appear to have greater susceptibility to chronic forms of psychosocial stress, extending beyond an increased incidence of mood disorders to include a 2- to 4-fold higher risk of stress-dependent myocardial infarction in women, and up to 10-fold higher risk of Takotsubo syndrome-a stress-dependent coronary-myocardial disorder most prevalent in post-menopausal women...

Stress-induced cardiomyopathy, otherwise known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy, typically presents with chest pain and acute left ventricular failure with unobstructed coronary arteries. There is an increase in disease incidence as clinicians are becoming more aware of this clinical entity. An atypical variant exists where there is left ventricular dysfunction with apical sparing. Various precipitants have been described in the literature, however, there has not been any documented case following massive gastrointestinal bleeding...

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is a reversible syndrome commonly found among patients presenting for acute coronary syndromes, especially women. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the incidence of takotsubo cardiomyopathy was dramatically increased. However, this clinical cardiac entity remains underdiagnosed, largely due to the interplay with acute coronary syndrome. The pathophysiology of takotsubo cardiomyopathy is miscellaneous, including coronary vasospasm, microcirculatory dysfunction, catecholamine surge, and sympathetic overdrive...

BACKGROUND: This present study investigated the incidence rates of cardiotoxicity among cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus other anticancer drugs. CONCLUSION: The incidence rate of ICI-related cardiotoxicity is low. Combination of ICI with either chemotherapy or targeted therapy might not significantly increase the risk of cardiotoxicities among cancer patients. Nevertheless, it is recommend being careful in patients treated high-risk cardiotoxicity medications to avoid drug-related cardiotoxicity with a combination of ICI therapy...
