Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), induced by abnormal mitochondrial fission related apoptosis, is a major concern in liver transplantation settings. Our previous studies have demonstrated that hepatic stimulator substance (HSS) is an anti-apoptotic effector and could protect liver from IRI. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we report that in vitro and in vivo HSS could regulate mitochondrial fission and hepatocyte apoptosis during liver IRI by orchestrating the translocation and activation of dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1)...

Low job satisfaction is linked to higher staff turnover and intensified shortages in healthcare providers (HCP). This study investigates the level of, and factors associated with, HCP job satisfaction in the national primary healthcare (PHC) network in Lebanon. The study adopts a cross-sectional design to survey HCP at 99 PHC centres distributed across the country between October 2013 and May 2014. The study questionnaire consisted of four sections: socio-demographics/professional background, employment characteristics, level of job satisfaction (Measure of Job Satisfaction scale) and level of professional burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory-HSS scale)...

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental information for efficient management of patients after a total knee replacement (TKR) through the evaluation of changes of range of motion, pain, functional level, and quality of life. [Subjects and Methods] For a total of 63 knee osteoarthritis patients, VAS, KSKS, KSFS, HSS, WOMAC scores and quality of life were evaluated for functional levels at pre-operation, post-operation, six months after operation, and 12 months after operation. [Results] After the TKR operations, participants showed significant improvement in KSKS, KSFS, WOMAC, and SF-36 scores when compared to pre-operation...

This study examined the neural basis of processing high- and low-message sensation value (MSV) antidrug public service announcements (PSAs) in high (HSS) and low sensation seekers (LSS) using fMRI. HSS more strongly engaged the salience network when processing PSAs (versus LSS), suggesting that high-MSV PSAs attracted their attention. HSS and LSS participants who engaged higher level cognitive processing regions reported that the PSAs were more convincing and believable and recalled the PSAs better immediately after testing...

BACKGROUND: A model health district was initiated through a program of health system strengthening (HSS) in Ifanadiana District of southeastern Madagascar in 2014. We report population health indicators prior to initiation of the program. METHODS: A representative household survey based on the Demographic Health Survey was conducted using a two-stage cluster sampling design in two strata - the initial program catchment area and the future catchment area. Chi-squared and t-tests were used to compare data by stratum, using appropriate sampling weights...

Volumetric absorptive microsampling device (VAMS) was evaluated for bioanalysis of tacrolimus, which was used as a model drug with high blood cell partition. Aliquots of blood (ca. 10μL) with different hematocrits and fortified with tacrolimus were wicked up by VAMS and tacrolimus was extracted with a methanol-water mixture (1:1, v/v) via sonication. After chromatography on an AQUITY UPLC HSS T3 column (100×2.1 i.d., mm, 1.8μm), tacrolimus and the internal standard ascomycin, were detected in the positive ion mode with electrospray ionization by monitoring of transitions m/z 826...

BACKGROUND: Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is defined as an oxygenation defect induced by intrapulmonary vasodilation in patients with liver disease or portal hypertension. It is investigated in patients with liver cirrhosis and less frequently in those with portal hypertension without liver cirrhosis, as may occur in hepatosplenic schistosomiasis (HSS). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of HPS in patients with HSS, and to determine whether the occurrence of HPS is influenced by concomitant cirrhosis...

Yolk-shell nanostructured photocatalyst which consists of inner core photocatalytic particles and outer silica shell exhibits high photocatalytic efficiency and molecular size selectivity due to the molecular sieving property of the outer shell. Creation of extended porosity in the shell endows it with improved adsorption properties and size selectivity toward targeted reactants. In this study, yolk-shell nanostructured photocatalyst consisting of TiO2 NPs core and porous silica shell with controllable pore size was fabricated through a facile single-step dual-templating approach utilizing oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions and amphiphilic protein molecules...

Rosmarinus officinalis L. is commonly used as a spice and flavoring agent. Diterpenes are the main active compounds of R. officinalis. An Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method was developed for the determination of carnosol, rosmanol, and carnosic acid isolated from R. officinalis in rat plasma, and applied to a pharmacokinetic study after oral administration of R. officinalis extract. Sample preparation involved a liquid-liquid extraction of the analytes with ethyl acetate...

BACKGROUND: COPD is a debilitating disease that affects patients' daily lives. One's daily physical activity (DPA) decreases due to multifactorial causes, and this decrease is correlated with a poor prognosis in COPD patients. Muscle wasting may at least be partly due to increased activity of the ubiquitin proteasome pathway and apoptosis. METHODS: This study investigated the relationships among DPA, circulating proteasome activity, and protein carbonyl in COPD patients and healthy subjects (HSs)...

Gamma-delta (γδ) T cells contribute to the innate immune response against cancer. In samples of 20 patients upon DLBCL diagnosis, we found that Vδ1(+) T cells were the major γδ T cell subset in tumors and PBMCs of patients, while Vδ2 T cells were preponderant in PBMCs of healthy subjects. Interestingly, the germinal center (GC) subtype was associated with an increase in Vδ1(+) T cells in tumors, whereas the non-GC subtype was associated with a lower frequency of γδ T cells. While circulating Vδ1(+) T cells of patients or HSs mostly exhibited a naïve phenotype, the majority of tumor Vδ1(+) T cells showed a central memory phenotype...

Nowadays, hypertension represents an important health problem, particularly in developed countries. In some cases the standard therapeutic approaches are not able to reestablish the normal blood pressure values: this condition is called "resistant hypertension". However, a fraction of cases of resistant hypertension are actually due to poor adherence to the prescribed therapy. Therapeutic Drug Monitoring could represent a direct and useful tool to correctly identify non-compliant patients. Nevertheless, high throughput methods for the simultaneous monitoring of a wide panel of drugs in the same analysis are lacking and, furthermore, there is not a generally acknowledged "standard" matrix for this test (plasma or urine)...

BACKGROUND: Dislocation is the second most common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The effectiveness of soft tissue repair to reduce dislocation rate is still debated and thus a meta-analysis was conducted. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was conducted for this meta-analysis. INCLUSION CRITERIA: clinical comparative trials on the use of soft tissue repair including rotators and capsule repair in primary THA...
