Heart failure is a common, costly, and debilitating syndrome that is associated with a highly complex drug regimen, a large number of comorbidities, and a large and often disparate number of healthcare providers. All of these factors conspire to increase the risk of heart failure exacerbation by direct myocardial toxicity, drug-drug interactions, or both. This scientific statement is designed to serve as a comprehensive and accessible source of drugs that may cause or exacerbate heart failure to assist healthcare providers in improving the quality of care for these patients...

BACKGROUND: Identification of heart failure (HF) patients at risk for hospitalization may improve care and reduce costs. We evaluated 9 biomarkers as predictors of cardiac hospitalization in chronic HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a multicenter cohort of 1,512 chronic HF outpatients, we assessed the association between 9 biomarkers and cardiac hospitalization with the use of a recurrent events approach. Over a median follow-up of 4 years, 843 participants experienced ≥ 1 hospitalizations (total 2,178 hospitalizations)...

BACKGROUND: The benefits of anemia treatment in patients with heart disease are uncertain. PURPOSE: To evaluate the benefits and harms of treatments for anemia in adults with heart disease. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases; clinical trial registries; reference lists; and technical advisors. STUDY SELECTION: English-language trials of blood transfusions, iron, or erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in adults with anemia and congestive heart failure or coronary heart disease and observational studies of transfusion...

REVIEW

The heart failure illness trajectory is both complex and unpredictable, which makes providing palliative care services to patients with heart failure a challenge. As a result, although services are needed, few tend to be offered beyond basic medical management. The traditional model of palliative care is typically based on palliative care being considered a system of care delivery most appropriate for patients with a predictable illness/death trajectory, such as terminal cancer. This type of model, which is based on the ability to predict the course of a terminal disease, does not fit the heart failure trajectory...
