OBJECTIVE: Leukemia is the most common cancer of childhood, with AML, CML, ALL and CLL being the most common. Environmental and genetic factors have been studied extensively in children with childhood leukemia. Other factors, such as the prenatal parental use of controlled substances, have not been investigated to the same degree. We review what is currently known about environmental and parental factors and the occurrence of leukemia in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for studies correlated pediatric leukemia with (1) ionizing radiation; (2) benzene; (3) parental drug use (4) parental alcohol use; (5) genetic factors...

OBJECTIVE: Leukaemia is the most common cancer of childhood, accounting for a third of cases. In order to assist clinicians in its early detection, we systematically reviewed all existing data on its clinical presentation and estimated the frequency of signs and symptoms presenting at or prior to diagnosis. DESIGN: We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for all studies describing presenting features of leukaemia in children (0-18 years) without date or language restriction, and, when appropriate, meta-analysed data from the included studies...

BACKGROUND: Fever and neutropenia (FN) is a common complication of pediatric oncology therapy and accounts for a large number of hospital admissions. Standard therapy for FN includes hospital admission and empiric antibiotics. Strict adherence to this practice leads to prolonged hospitalizations that may be unnecessary for patients at low risk of having an underlying significant infection. PROCEDURE: Children admitted with FN could be discharged after a minimum of 48 hr with no further antibiotic therapy once they had been afebrile for 24 hr with negative blood cultures from initial presentation, regardless of their neutrophil count...

Optimal function of multiple intracellular signaling pathways is essential for normal regulation of cellular transcription, translation, growth, proliferation, and survival. Dysregulation or aberrant activation of such cascades can lead to inappropriate cell survival and abnormal cell proliferation in leukemia. Successful treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with tyrosine kinase inhibitors targeting the BCR-ABL fusion gene is a prime example of effectively inhibiting intracellular signaling cascades...

Although regimens for induction therapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are similar across the United States, typical practice with regard to inpatient length of stay (LOS) varies by institution. US children's hospitals were categorized by typical induction LOS; and readmissions, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admissions, and average adjusted charges were compared for the first 30 days from initial admission. Using Pediatric Health Information System data, we extracted ALL induction admissions from 2007 to 2013...

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition is considered to have a negative impact on survival in children with malignancies. The objective of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the morbidity pattern and outcome of therapy in undernourished (UN) children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of impact of weight for age was performed in children treated for ALL. The IAP & CDC criteria for undernutrition were used in the two different time periods of analysis...
