BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) allows for staging of the axillary node status in early-stage breast cancer (BC) patients and avoiding complete axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) when the sentinel lymph node (SLN) is proven to be free of disease. In a previous randomized trial we compared SLNB followed by ALND (ALND arm) with SLNB followed by ALND only if the SLN presented metastasis (SLNB arm). At a mid-term of ≈ 6 years median follow-up, the two strategies appeared to ensure similar survival and locoregional control...

BACKGROUND: Many patients with clinically node-positive breast cancer receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Recent trials suggest the potential for limiting axillary surgery in patients who convert to pathologically node-negative disease. The authors developed a nomogram to predict axillary response to NAC in patients with cN1 disease that can assist clinicians in treatment planning. METHODS: Patients with cT1-4N1M0 breast cancer who received NAC and underwent axillary lymph node dissection from 2001 through 2013 were identified (n = 584)...

Over the past several years, there has been an increasing rate of bilateral prophylactic mastectomy (BPM) and contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) surgeries. Since publication of the 2007 SSO position statement on the use of risk-reducing mastectomy, there have been significant advances in the understanding of breast cancer biology and treatment. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the current literature as a resource to facilitate a shared and informed decision-making process regarding the use of risk-reducing mastectomy...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of breast conservation surgery (BCS) followed by radiotherapy (RT) in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) versus non-TNBC. METHODS: We searched the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases from inception through March 31, 2014, using search terms related to TNBC, BCS, and RT. Studies comparing the efficacy of BCS followed by RT in TNBC versus non-TNBC were reviewed. RESULTS: 5 studies including 2,922 non-TNBC and 510 TNBC cases were selected...
