With the ability to structurally characterize cardiac manifestations, echocardiography is used for the diagnosis and management of infective endocarditis. In establishing the diagnosis according to the Duke criteria, the findings of endocardial involvement (vegetation, abscess, prosthetic valve dehiscence) or new valvular regurgitation represent "major" diagnostic criteria. As echocardiography cannot reliably differentiate noninfective from infective lesions, however, proper diagnosis lies in correlating echocardiography with clinical findings...

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the utility of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis (IE). METHODS: Sixteen patients with a preliminary diagnosis of IE (10 women and six men; age range, 4-66 years) were referred for cardiac MRI. MRI sequences were as follows: echo-planar cine true fast imaging with steady-state precession (true-FISP), dark-blood fast spin echo T1-weighted imaging, T2-weighted imaging, dark-blood half-Fourier single shot turbo spin echo (HASTE), and early contrast-enhanced first-pass fast low-angle shot (FLASH)...

Heart failure remains the leading cause of hospitalization in older patients and is considered a growing public health problem with a significant financial burden on the health care system. The suboptimal efficacy and safety profile of diuretic-based therapeutic regimens coupled with unsatisfactory results of the studies on novel pharmacologic agents have positioned ultrafiltration on the forefront as an appealing therapeutic option for patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). In recent years, substantial interest in the use of ultrafiltration has been generated due to the advent of dedicated portable devices and promising results of trials focusing both on mechanistic and clinical aspects of this therapeutic modality...

Soon after their introduction in 1957, thiazide diuretics became a recognized cause of hyponatremia. Thiazides may be the sole cause and they may exacerbate hyponatremia in patients with disorders that cause the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. Although thiazides do not inhibit the ability to concentrate the urine, they impair diluting ability in several ways: inhibition of sodium and chloride transport at cortical diluting sites; stimulation of vasopressin release; reduction of glomerular filtration and enhanced proximal water reabsorption, which reduce delivery to the distal diluting sites; and, possibly, a direct effect on water flow in the collecting duct...

Search Tips

Use Boolean operators: AND/OR

diabetic AND foot
diabetes OR diabetic

Exclude a word using the 'minus' sign

Virchow -triad

Use Parentheses

water AND (cup OR glass)

Add an asterisk (*) at end of a word to include word stems

Neuro* will search for Neurology, Neuroscientist, Neurological, and so on

Use quotes to search for an exact phrase

"primary prevention of cancer"
(heart or cardiac or cardio*) AND arrest -"American Heart Association"
