Digital technology marked the first decade of the 21st century with the advent of whole slide imaging (WSI). Thanks to the invention of digital scanners, WSI technology enables the creation and permanent storage of high resolution images from traditional glass slides. The application of digital pathology has recently been explored within the subspecialty of renal pathology for teaching, pathology-based clinical trials, development of new classification systems, and in support to systems biology-based research in a setting of large consortia...

The effects of nephropathy risk variants in the apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1) on renal histopathology in African Americans with arterionephrosclerosis or putative 'hypertension-associated' nephropathy are unknown. APOL1 genotype-phenotype correlations were performed in a blinded manner from renal biopsies in 196 self-reported African Americans with arterionephrosclerosis on kidney biopsy at a large national nephropathology practice. Subjects had chronic kidney disease without nephrotic syndrome. A discovery analysis compared histopathologic changes in the glomerular and tubulointerstitial compartments in 58 subjects with 2 versus 56 subjects with 0 APOL1 risk variants...

IgM nephropathy (IgMN) is an idiopathic immune complex-mediated glomerulopathy that was first described as a distinct disease in a nephropathology literature in 1978. Here, a historical review and the current status of IgMN in the light of world literature and the current experience will be presented. The Pubmed (www.pubmed.gov) search was made for articles on IgMN as the sole subject of the study or where it constituted a significant number of cases in a biopsy series in the world literature written in English...

Nephropathology is an integral component of nephrology education. Online teaching sites provide valuable educational materials to learners, but learner satisfaction has not been measured. We developed a nephropathology website and measured learners' satisfaction. The Nephrology On-Demand Histopathology website (https://blog.ecu.edu/sites/nephrologyondemand/?page_id=4502) provided nephropathologic specimens with explanations. Users were asked to complete a Likert-based survey (1-strongly agree . . . 5-strongly disagree) regarding four key areas of content quality: accuracy, currency, objectivity, and usefulness...
