BACKGROUND: Hepatic resection is a major surgical procedure. Data on outcomes of hepatectomy in Saudi Arabia are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To measure morbidity and mortality and assess predictors of outcome after hepatectomy. DESIGN: Descriptive study. SETTING: Tertiary care center in Saudi Arabia with well established hepatobiliary surgery unit. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing liver resection in our institute during 2006-2014...

Radical liver resection of colorectal liver metastases (CLMs) is the only potentially curative treatment. But primary resectability of CLMs ranges from 15% to 20%. Insufficient future liver remnant volume (FLRV) is the main cause of primary unresectability of CLMs. Currently, there are several methods that can optimize FLRV and permit radical resection of CLMs. The basic methods include two-stage liver resection, portal vein embolization (PVE) and portal vein ligation. These methods have very low morbidity and mortality rate...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an emerging health problem in the Western World both for its raising tendency as well as for its metastatic potential. Almost half of the patients with CRC will develop liver metastases during the course of their disease. The liver surgeon dealing with colorectal liver metastases faces several surgical dilemmas especially in the setting of the timing of operation. Synchronous resectable metastases should be treated prior or after induction chemotherapy? Furthermore in the case of synchronous colorectal liver metastases which organ should we first deal with, the liver or the colon? All these questions are set in the editorial and impulse for further investigation is put focusing on multidisciplinary approach and individualization of treatment modalities...

UNLABELLED: Although breast cancer liver metastases are considered a sign of systemic recurrence and are considered a poor prognostic factor that transforms the patient into a candidate for palliative chemotherapy, surgery might be performed with good results. Success reported after liver resection for colorectal hepatic metastases encouraged the oncological surgeon to apply similar protocols in breast cancer liver metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data of patients submitted to hepatectomies for breast cancer liver metastases in the "Dan Setlacec" Center of Gastrointestinal Disease and Liver Transplantation, Fundeni Clinical Institute, Bucharest were retrospectively reviewed...

BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in therapies for liver metastases, colorectal cancer remains one of the commonest causes of cancer-related deaths in the UK. SOURCES OF DATA: The international literature on the management of colorectal liver metastases (CLM) was reviewed. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Due to a combination of highly active systemic agents and low perioperative mortality achieved by high-volume centres, a growing number of patients are being offered liver resection with curative intent...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignancy worldwide. In CRC patients, metastases are the main cause of cancer-related mortality. In a group of metastatic CRC patients, the metastases are limited to a single site (solitary organ); the liver and lungs are the most commonly involved sites. When metastatic disease is limited to the liver and/or lungs, the resectability of the metastatic lesions will dictate the management approach and the outcome. Less commonly, the site of solitary organ CRC metastasis is the peritoneum...

Omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential nutrients. Although several studies have suggested that a balanced dietary n-6:n-3 ratio is essential for brain development, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanism is poorly understood. Here, we found that feeding pregnant mice an n-6 excess/n-3 deficient diet, which reflects modern human diets, impairsed neocortical neurogenesis in the offspring. This impaired neurodevelopment occurs through a precocious fate transition of neural stem cells from the neurogenic to gliogenic lineage...
