RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
Kristen E Jastrowski Mano, Katherine S Salamon, Keri R Hainsworth, Kimberly J Anderson Khan, Renee J Ladwig, W Hobart Davies, Steven J Weisman
CONTEXT: It is estimated that 1 in 5 children in the United States is affected by chronic pain. Increasing adaptive coping strategies and decreasing stress may be important in treatment. Research has suggested that mindfulness can help alleviate symptoms associated with medical illnesses and increase quality of life. Little is known about the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in youth, partly due to insufficient methodological rigor in related studies. OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of the present study was to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of MBSR for a treatment-seeking sample of youth with chronic pain...

REVIEW
Rocío de la Vega, Jordi Miró
The aim of this study is to review the options available for assessing sleep in pediatric chronic pain populations. One subjective measure of sleep (questionnaires) and two objective measures (polysomnography and actigraphy) were reviewed. The following databases were searched from their inception to June 2011: PsycINFO, ERIC, FRANCIS, MEDLINE, PsycARTICLES, Global health, Inspec, Health and Psychosocial Instruments, CINAHL, Scopus and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses databases. A total of nine sleep questionnaires were identified, two of which proved to be reliable and valid when used with pediatric chronic pain patients and, according to evidence-based assessment criteria, can be regarded as "well-established" instruments...

The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) initiative is a comprehensive strategy by the National Institutes of Health to support the development and validation of precise instruments to assess self-reported health domains across healthy and disease-specific populations. Much progress has been made in instrument development, but there remains a gap in the validation of PROMIS measures for pediatric chronic pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the construct validity and responsiveness to change of 7 PROMIS domains for the assessment of children (ages: 8-18) with chronic pain--Pain Interference, Fatigue, Anxiety, Depression, Mobility, Upper Extremity Function, and Peer Relationships...

The current study aimed to validate the child and parent pain catastrophizing scale in a large chronic pain sample and to identify child pain catastrophizing clinical reference points. Patients and parents (n=697) evaluated at a pediatric pain program completed the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, child (PCS-C) and parent (PCS-P) reports, along with additional measures of psychological functioning. The measure's psychometric properties were examined, as were relations across demographic, pain, and psychological characteristics and pain catastrophizing...
