OBJECTIVE: To derive and validate a predictive model and novel emergency medical services (EMS) screening tool for severe sepsis (SS). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. Little is known about the epidemiology of sepsis in the Netherlands. In addition, information regarding the ability of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to recognize sepsis is lacking.
