Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI; direct self-injury without lethal intent) often is thought to be associated with impulse control problems. Recent research, however, offers conflicting results about whether impulsivity is a risk factor for NSSI engagement. The objective of the present meta-analytic review was two-fold: (a) to address the mixed findings of previous research by determining the relationship between stress and impulsivity; and (b) to examine age differences in this relationship.
