BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The limited success rate of the standard inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) has led to the development of alternative approaches for providing mandibular anesthesia. Two techniques, the Gow-Gates mandibular nerve block and the Akinosi-Vazirani closed-mouth mandibular nerve block, are reliable alternatives to the traditional IANB. The Gow-Gates technique requires the patient's mouth to be open wide, and the dentist aims to administer local anesthetic just anterior to the neck of the condyle in proximity to the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve after its exit from the foramen ovale...

BACKGROUND: The author describes the use of the infiltration anesthetic technique to anesthetize mandibular teeth in adults and explores its mechanism of action. METHODS: The author reviewed articles describing randomized controlled trials of the mandibular infiltration anesthetic technique in healthy participants. RESULTS: The author found that using the mandibular infiltration anesthetic technique can produce anesthesia in adult mandibular teeth...

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The provision of mandibular anesthesia traditionally has relied on nerve block anesthetic techniques such as the Halsted, the Gow-Gates and the Akinosi-Vazirani methods. The authors present two alternative techniques to provide local anesthesia in mandibular teeth: the periodontal ligament (PDL) injection and the intraosseous (IO) injection. The authors also present indications for and complications associated with these techniques. CONCLUSIONS: The PDL injection and the IO injection are effective anesthetic techniques for managing nerve block failures and for providing localized anesthesia in the mandible...

BACKGROUND: Even though there are many studies available reporting on implant failures, there are few studies that follow implant failures over time in large populations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the annual incidence of reported implant failures for patients and operations over a 28-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 8,528 patients were consecutively provided with 39,077 implants in 10,719 implant operations during a 27-year period (1986-2012) at one specialist clinic...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the effect of submucosal injection of dexamethasone and triamcinolone acetonide on postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus occurring after impacted mandibular third molar surgery. METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 78 patients (aged 18 to 35) with asymptomatic, unilateral, impacted mandibular third molar, and without any systemic disease were included in this study. Patients were divided into three groups randomly (control, dexamethasone, and triamcinolone acetonide)...

During the last decade an increased interest in alternative, preventive, and therapeutic strategies in dentistry has arisen. Probiotics are living microorganisms which, if administered in sufficient amounts, provide a health benefit to the host. Their precise mechanisms of action have not been identified, but they are able to interfere with the imbalance occurring in biofilm-associated infections. In other fields of medicine, mainly in gastroenterology, their usefulness is already proven. Concerning oral threats, probiotic bacteria may reduce the numbers of pathogens associated with dental caries (mutans streptococci)...

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The geometries of tooth preparations are important features that aid in the retention and resistance of cemented complete crowns. The clinically relevant values and the methods used to measure these are not clear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to retrieve, organize, and critically appraise studies measuring clinical tooth preparation parameters, specifically the methodology used to measure the preparation geometry. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A database search was performed in Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect with an additional hand search on December 5, 2013...

OBJECTIVES: To assess patient-perceived process-related quality of care in patients undergoing different prosthodontic treatments, and to investigate whether perceived burdens are related to specific procedures during prosthodontic treatments, i.e., to specific treatment components. METHODS: In this non-randomised prospective intervention study, 104 dental patients (mean age: 52.2±13.9 years, 50% female) were included. Burdens during treatments with fixed dental prostheses (FDP, n=90), removable dental prostheses (RDP, n=10), and complete dentures (CD; n=4) were assessed with the Burdens in Prosthetic Dentistry Questionnaire (BiPD-Q)...

One of the key issues of modern implant rehabilitation is the overall shortening of treatment time. High survival rates for immediately loaded implants have been reported in many but not all treatment modalities. In recent years, considerable evidence for the successful immediate loading outcome has been documented in both animal and human studies. The mechanical force generated by immediate loading may explain the favorable biologic response of bone and surrounding tissue when the design is biomechanically sound...

Recently, monolithic zirconia restorations have received attention as an alternative to zirconia veneered with feldspathic porcelain to eliminate chipping failures of veneer ceramics. In this clinical report, a patient with mandibular edentulism received 4 dental implants in the interforaminal area, and a screw-retained monolithic zirconia prosthesis was fabricated. The patient also received a maxillary complete removable dental prosthesis over 4 anterior roots. At the 18-month follow-up, all of the zirconia cylinders were seen to be fractured, and the contacting abutment surfaces had lost structural integrity...
