OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the controversy of whether hypervascularity on color Doppler sonography correlates with thyroid malignancy by reviewing the literature and sonographic-pathologic correlation. METHODS: Over a 20-year period, 698 thyroid nodules had color Doppler and histopathologic data. Intranodular vascularity was graded 0 to 3+, and histopathologic findings were recorded. RESULTS: The data were collected from 698 patients (557 women and 141 men) with a mean age of 48 years (range, 16-87 years)...

CONTEXT: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is the most lethal of all thyroid cancers and one of the most aggressive human carcinomas. In the search for effective treatment options, research toward targeted, personalized therapies is proving to be a path with great potential. As we gain a deeper understanding of the genetic (eg, BRAF(V600E), PIK3CA, TP53, hTERT mutations, etc) and epigenetic (eg, histone methylation, histone de-acetylation, microRNA regulatory circuits, etc) alterations driving ATC, we are able to find targets when developing novel therapies to improve the lives of patients...

Objective To summarize the characteristics of lymph node metastasis in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma accompanied with Graves disease, and to provide evidence for clinical treatment. Methods Totally 98 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma and Graves disease who had been treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2004 to December 2013 were divided into the lymph node metastasis positive group (n=34) and lymph node metastasis negative group (n=64). The general information, blood biochemical results, pathological results, and prognoses were compared between these two groups...

Context: There is much debate surrounding the choice of which patient should be submitted to postsurgical remnant radioiodine remnant ablation (RRA), particularly in low-risk (LR) and intermediate-risk (IR) differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of postoperative high-sensitive thyroglobulin (Tg) on L-thyroxine (LT4-HSTg) and postoperative neck ultrasound (US) in risk restratification and decision to perform RRA...

BACKGROUND: BRAF(V600E) mutation has been investigated by immunohistochemistry and has shown high sensitivity and specificity. We aim to investigate the accuracy of immunohistochemistry versus molecular testing of BRAF(V600E) in papillary thyroid cancer using a large number of polymerase chain reaction-positive BRAF(V600E) papillary thyroid cancer tissues. METHODS: We stained 130 formalin-fixed papillary thyroid cancer specimens using the VE1 antibody: 100 BRAF(V600E) positive and 30 BRAF(V600E) negative confirmed by PCR...

More aggressive thyroid cancer cells show a higher activity of glycometabolism. Targeting cancer cell metabolism has emerged as a novel approach to prevent or treat malignant tumors. Glucose metabolism regulation effect of metformin in papillary thyroid cancer was investigated in the current study. Human papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) cell lines BCPAP and KTC1 were used. Cell viability was detected by CCK8 assay. Glucose uptake and relative gene expression were measured in metformin (0-10 mM for 48 h)-treated cells by (18)F-FDG uptake assay and western blotting analysis, respectively...

A unique prognostic role of the genetic duet of BRAF V600E and TERT promoter mutations in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has been recently established, but the role of RAS mutation in this genetic interplay remains to be established. Using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data of patients with PTC from 19 medical centers, we investigated the interactions among the three mutations in clinical outcomes of PTC. We found that BRAF and RAS mutations were mutually exclusive, but both were associated with TERT promoter mutations, with the genetic duet of BRAF/RAS and TERT mutations occurring in 34/388 (8...

Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene is critical in the process of recognizing and repairing DNA lesions and is related to invasion and metastasis of malignancy. The incidence rate of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has increased for several decades and is higher in females than males. In this study, we want to investigate whether ATM polymorphisms are associated with gender-specific metastasis of PTC. 358 PTC patients in Northern China, including 109 males and 249 females, were included in our study. Four ATM single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS)...
