Oral biofilm can never be fully removed by oral hygiene measures. Biofilm left behind after brushing is often left behind on the same sites and exposed multiple times to antimicrobials from toothpastes and mouthrinses, after which removal becomes increasingly difficult. On the basis of this observation, we hypothesize that oral bacteria adhering to salivary conditioning films become more difficult to remove after adsorption of antimicrobials due to stiffening of their adhesive bond. To verify this hypothesis, bacteria adhering to bare and saliva-coated glass were exposed to 3 different mouthrinses, containing chlorhexidine-digluconate, cetylpyridinium-chloride, or amine-fluoride, after which bacterial vibration spectroscopy was carried out or a liquid-air interface was passed over the adhering bacteria to stimulate their detachment...

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of short-term changes in the oral microbial ecology of dental plaque and plaque levels after topical treatment of a combination of 10% povidone iodine (PI) and 5% sodium fluoride varnish (FV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single group design intervention study on 12 pediatric patients, who underwent two baseline plaques samplings before the intervention, were enrolled in the study. A modified mixed dentition Silness-Löe plaque index score was used to assess plaque accumulation and microbial composition was assessed by amplicon sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA V4 region...

DATA SOURCES: The Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Medline, Embase, CINAHL, LILACS and BBO, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, Web of Science Conference Proceedings and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched. Reference lists of identified articles were also scanned for relevant papers. Study authors were contacted for additional information. STUDY SELECTION: Randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials using or indicating blind outcome assessment that compared fluoride varnish to placebo or no treatment for at least one year were included...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the association of 1% chlorhexidine varnish (CHX) and 40% xylitol solution (XYL) on Streptococcus mutans (SM) counts and plaque indices in 2- to 5-year-olds. METHODS: Sixty-eight children were selected with medium levels (1 x 10³) to very high levels (>1 x 10⁵) of SM in the saliva. Subjects were divided into 4 groups of 17 children each: (1) CHX; (2) CHX+XYL; (3) XYL; and(4) 0.05% sodium fluoride (F)...

AIM: The present study was designed to determine whether maternal xylitol consumption through regular chewing of xylitol gums can affect the salivary mutans streptococci (MS), dental caries, and dental plaque levels of their children. METHOD: Study sample included 60 mother and child pairs with high salivary mutans streptococcus (MS) levels. Samples were randomly divided into experimental group (30 pairs) and control group (30 pairs). Mothers in the experimental group received xylitol chewing gum treatment three times/day for three months, whereas the controls received fluoride varnish...

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to measure the effect of xylitol mouthrinse on salivary Streptococcus mutans counts. METHODS: Subjects in the study group (n = 25) used xylitol mouthrinse for 4 weeks, while another group (n = 25) used saccharine mouthrinse. S. mutans were measured before and after intervention. RESULTS: At the baseline the mean S. mutans scores were 3.9 (SE = 0.03) and 3.9 (0.04) for the xylitol group and control group respectively, while the scores were 2...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present paper is to report results from oral biologic studies carried out in connection with a caries study. METHODS: Samples of whole-mouth saliva and dental plaque were collected from initially 7- to 8-year-old subjects who participated in a 3-year school-based programme investigating the effect of the consumption of polyol-containing candies on caries rates. The subjects were randomized in three cohorts, consumed erythritol, xylitol, or sorbitol candies...
