Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic multi-organ autoimmune disease with different immunological characteristics and clinical manifestations characterized by an autoantibody response to nuclear and cytoplasmic antigens; the etiology of this disease remains largely unknown. Most recent genome-wide association studies demonstrate that genetics significantly predispose to SLE onset, but the incomplete disease concordance rates between monozygotic twins indicates a role for other complementary factors in SLE pathogenesis...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of SLE in a genetically homogeneous Caucasian SLE patient population. METHODS: Serum levels of the following cytokines were determined by ELISA in SLE patients (diagnosed as per ACR diagnostic criteria): IL-1β, IL-10, IL-12p70 and TNF-α. Demographic data, disease activity as per the SLEDAI and damage scores (SLICC) at the 5-year follow-up were calculated. RESULTS: Enhanced production of TNF-α, IL-1 and IL-10 were observed in SLE patients compared with controls...

BACKGROUND: Previous work suggests that lipocalin 2 is involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and that this novel antigen could serve as a high-quality renal biomarker of acute kidney injury in SLE. However, serum lipocalin 2 antibody levels remain unclear. We have therefore undertaken this study to assess the level of serum IgG antibody against lipocalin 2 in different disease states and to evaluate the diagnostic value of this potential biomarker in SLE. METHODS: Serum levels of anti-lipocalin IgG antibodies were measured by ELISA in 103 SLE patients, 93 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, 29 primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients, 13 systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients, and 91 healthy controls...

OBJECTIVES: Weight loss leads to reduced serum urate (SU) in people with obesity. However, the clinical relevance of such reductions in SU is unknown. This study examined the impact of non-surgical weight loss and bariatric surgery on SU targets in people with morbid obesity and diabetes. METHODS: The study was a single-centre, prospective study of 60 people with type 2 diabetes and body mass index ≥35 kg/m(2). Following 6 months of non-surgical weight loss, all participants had laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, with a further 1 year of follow-up...
