BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is essential for maintaining optimal bone health. The prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy in athletes is currently unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy in athletes. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Multiple databases were searched and studies assessing serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status in athletes were identified. Serum 25(OH)D is measured to clinically determine vitamin D status...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D, L-cysteine (LC) and glutathione (GSH) levels are lower in the blood of diabetic patients. This study examined the hypothesis that the levels of vitamin D and LC correlate with those of GSH in the blood of type 2 diabetic patients (T2D), and that vitamin D and LC upregulate glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCLC), which catalyzes GSH biosynthesis, in cultured monocytes. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Fasting blood was obtained after written informed consent from T2D (n=79) and healthy controls (n=22)...

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D appears to have significant effects on both innate and acquired immunity and deficiency may be associated with both susceptibility and disease severity in some autoimmune conditions. There has been little focus on the potential immunomodulatory role of vitamin D in AS. This study systematically reviews the evidence for an association between vitamin D deficiency and disease susceptibility and severity in AS. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science and conference abstracts of the European League Against Rheumatism (2002-13), British Society for Rheumatology (1993-2013) and ACR (2006-13)...
