PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of meropenem single dose before transrectal prostate biopsy, instead of ciprofloxacin in the era of fluoroquinolones resistance. METHODS: This prospective study included patients with indications for prostatic biopsy from January to December 2014. Those with known resistance in fluoroquinolones or meropenem or with decreased creatinine clearance were excluded. Patients were randomized into two groups, and statistical analysis was carried out...

We evaluated the incidence and risk factors of resistant Escherichia coli infections after the prostate biopsy under flouroquinolone prophylaxis. From January 2003 to December 2012, we retrospectively evaluated the records of 2215 patients. The risk factors were described for infective complications and resistant E. coli in positive cultures was calculated. Of 2215 patients, 153 had positive urine cultures, such as 129 (84·3%) E. coli, 8 (5·2%) Enterococcus spp., 6 (3·9%) Enterobacter spp., 5 (3·2%) Pseudomonas spp...

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the incidence, bacteriologic characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance in acute prostatitis after transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 9568 patients who underwent TRUS-guided biopsy between March 1995 and May 2013. These patients received oral quinolone and/or cephalosporin and intramuscular aminoglycoside as antibiotic prophylaxis. In patients with acute prostatitis, blood and urine cultures were obtained on hospital admission...

PURPOSE: Urinary tract infections (UTIs), the most common serious bacterial infections in children, are frequently caused by Escherichia coli. The purpose of this study was to investigate E. coli resistance/multidrug resistance to antibiotics most frequently used for UTIs. METHODS: Children 0-18 years of age, hospitalized at the University Pediatric Hospital in Novi Sad, Serbia, were included in a 1-year observational prospective study. The microbiological analysis was performed using the standard Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method...

This study determined the antimicrobial susceptibility of Escherichia coli causing community-acquired, acute, uncomplicated, non-recurrent urinary tract infection in unselected women aged 18-65 years and compared the results with those obtained 8 years earlier in the first ECO·SENS study (1999-2000). During 2007-2008, urine samples were taken from 1697 women in Austria, Greece, Portugal, Sweden and the UK. The countries were chosen to represent areas of Europe indicated to have more (Greece and Portugal) or less (UK, Austria and Sweden) problems with resistance...

OBJECTIVES: To report the sensitivity and resistance of Escherichia coli in patients with infectious complications after prostate biopsy in a North American cohort. Increasing antibiotic-resistant E. coli has been observed worldwide. METHODS: Data were available for 1446 patients who had undergone transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy from 2001 to 2010. Of the 1446 patients, 932 were administered 500 mg of ciprofloxacin 1 hour before prostate biopsy and 514 were administered a 3-day course of ciprofloxacin starting 1 day before biopsy plus an enema the night before...

BACKGROUND: Decreased antimicrobial susceptibility after increased antibiotic use is a known phenomenon. Restoration of susceptibility once antimicrobial use is decreased is not self-evident. Our objective was to evaluate, in a community setting, the impact of quinolone restriction on the antimicrobial resistance of E. coli urine isolates. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, quasi-experimental ecological study to assess the proportion of quinolone-susceptible E...
