Clinical experimental evaluation of the effect of dibromotyrosine on thyroid function.

In order to evaluate the effects of dibromotyrosine (DBT) on the thyroid function (already demonstrated in animals), thyroid tests were performed in 10 subjects with functional signs of thyroid hyperfunction, before and after administration of 1800 mg (600 X 3) of DBT for 10 days. The results show a mild decrease of the RAI uptake, but no significative interference on the thyrodal hormonogenesis. According to the author, the DBT seems to act on the hypothalamic centers regulating the thyroid function, due to its peculiar molecular components. It is therefore particularly suitable for the treatment of patients with involvement of the C.N.S.
