Chlorophyll production is a complicated, multifaceted process. Indeed, the cyanobacterial progenitor of chloroplasts bestowed eukaryotic plants and algae with two distinct nonhomologous enzymes for reducing protochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide (the penultimate step of chlorophyll a biosynthesis): light-dependent (LPOR) and light-independent protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (DPOR) (Armstrong, 1998; Fujita & Bauer, 2003; Reinbothe et al., 2010).
