Luteolin suppresses teratoma cells growth and induces cell apoptosis via inhibiting Bcl-2.

Luteolin, which was discovered in plant foods, has out range of therapeutic actions. In order to examine the potentialeffects of luteolin in ovarian teratocarcinoma, the human ovarian teratocarcinoma cell line PA-1 was used as in vitro and in vivo model. It was confirmed that the luteolin could inhibit the proliferation and colony formation of PA-1 cells in vitro. The flow cytometry results suggested that the luteolin could induce the apoptosis of PA-1 cells and in a dose-dependent manner. Immunofluorescence and PCR results showed the expanded expression of apoptosis was related to Bcl-2 and Bax proteins, which was also heightened in luteolin treated cells than control groups. In conclusion, the luteolin could extremely inhibit the ovarian teratocarcinoma cells proliferation in xenograft mouse models without observed systemic toxicity evidence. The results suggested that the luteolin could induce cell apoptosis and inhibit tumor growth of PA-1 cells.
