APSH PRE-1 WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSION?

On the occasion of ISH 2016 Seoul, which includes the APSH meeting, as the president of APSH, I will briefly summarize the important points in the management of hypertension from the experience in the past 20 years in Korea.I emphasize 4 areas to be improved in hypertension management. The first is how to correctly diagnose hypertension, which should be done by employing out of office BP measurement. In Korea, these modalities are underutilized. The second is how to increase the awareness rate in hypertension. Continued education increased the awareness rate in the past but more importance should be emphasized from the adolescent period. The third is to overcome therapeutic inertia and resistant hypertension. Considering the prevalence of resistant hypertension, the percentage of using more than 4 drugs is very low, suggesting high prevalence of therapeutic inertia in Korea. More simple and effective regimen should be included in the guideline of hypertension. The last is to reduce the number of medication patients take. In the aged society, the drug burden should be reduced to improve the compliance of the patients. There are many kinds of antihypertensive drugs enough to control hypertension but what is in short is not to effectively use them. More efforts should be done for dramatic reduction of CV diseases in the near future.
