[Recent ultrasonographic advances in the early diagnosis of carotid stenosis].

We review the present status of screening technology in the early diagnosis of carotid stenosis, underlining the advantages of TSA echo-Doppler screening and transcranial Doppler, versus invasive (arteriography) and non-invasive indirect methods. We describe the screening technique and classification criteria for carotid disease with this technique, providing several clinical cases emphasizing the need to adopt a risk strategy, which coordinates primary assistance with modern technology to approach asymptomatic patients and to reduce the cerebrovascular mortality rate.
