Profile of MDRTB Patients With Positive GeneXpert MTB/RIF at Western Visayas Medical Center PMDT Unit, Iloilo City, Philippines August 2011 to August 2013.

SESSION TITLE: Respiratory Infections Posters IISESSION TYPE: Original Investigation PosterPRESENTED ON: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 01:30 PM - 02:30 PMPURPOSE: GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To find out the profile of MDRTB patients with positive GeneXpert MTB/RIF result at the PMDT Unit of WVMC.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: To find out the most common affected gender, age group, area of residence, site of body affected , chest x ray findings, registration group and previous treatment received prior to referral to PMDT of MDRTB patients.METHODS: Chart review of patients with positive GeneXpert MTB/RIF results at PMDT Unit of WVMC August 2011 to August 2013 RESULTS: There were 70 subjects included in the study majority of whom were males, 74% with 26% females. MDRTB was most common on the 30-39 years age group at 36% followed by those in the 50-59 years, 20% and those in the 40-49 years , 19%. All patients ( n=70, 100%) tested positive for GeneXpert/MTB RIF and all had the lungs as the primary site of disease. Area of residence most patients revealed majority came from provinces outside of Iloilo City 67%. Of those patients with chest x ray films many presented with infiltrates 60% followed by those with cavitary lesions 31%. As to the registration group majority were classified as other patient with non DOTS treatment, 26% followed by those who had CAT II relapse at 19% and those with CAT I relapse at 17%. Previous treatment received by MDRTB patients prior to referral to the PMDT showed 90% received first line drugs only followed by those with first and second line drugs at 6% and by those who were new cases, 4%.CONCLUSIONS: Profile of patients with MDRTB with positive GeneXpert result showed majority were males in the 30-39 years age group, came from the province outside of Iloilo City, had infiltrates on chest x ray, belonged in the registration group classified as other patient with non DOTS treatment and received first line drugs only prior to referral to PMDT. All patients ( n=70, 100%) tested positive for GeneXpert/MTB RIF and all had the lungs as the primary site of disease.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: As a new diagnostic modality in Panay Island the use of GeneXpert /MTB RIF for the diagnosis of MDRTB cases makes case finding much faster and is of valuable help to the indigent patients of WVMC as well as to private patients in Iloilo City in particular and the province of Panay in general.
