Acute kidney injury (AKI) limits cisplatin use. We tested whether urine cystatin C (uCyC) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) can preidentify patients at risk for AKI. Patients initiating cisplatin-based chemotherapy were prospectively enrolled. uNGAL/uCyC were measured pre/post-cisplatin administration and compared with serum creatinine (sCr). For hypertensive women in CHIPS (Control of Hypertension in Pregnancy Study), we assessed whether the maternal benefits of tight control could be achieved, while minimizing any potentially negative effect on fetal growth, by delaying initiation of antihypertensive therapy until later in pregnancy. We report the generation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) from dermal fibroblasts of a female patient carrier of the two compound heterozygous mutations c.568 C>T p.R190W (maternal allele), and c.1781 G>A p.R594Q (paternal allele) on the KCNQ1 gene, causing Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome (JLNS). To obtain hiPSCs, we used the classical approach of the four retroviruses each encoding for a reprogramming factor OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, cMYC. Theory predicts and evidence shows that plant species that use the C4 photosynthetic pathway (C4 species) are less responsive to elevated carbon dioxide ( e CO2 ) than species that use only the C3 pathway (C3 species). We document a reversal from this expected C3 -C4 contrast. Over the first 12 years of a 20-year free-air CO2 enrichment experiment with 88 C3 or C4 grassland plots, we found that biomass was markedly enhanced at e CO2 relative to ambient CO2 in C3 but not C4 plots, as expected. Computational methods for identification of cell populations from polychromatic flow cytometry data are changing the paradigm of cytometry bioinformatics. Data clustering is the most common computational approach to unsupervised identification of cell populations from multidimensional cytometry data. However, interpretation of the identified data clusters is labor-intensive. Certain types of user-defined cell populations are also difficult to identify by fully automated data clustering analysis.
