Efficient production and secretion of recombinant proteins in mammalian cell lines relies in a combination of genetic, metabolic and culture strategy factors. The present work assesses the influence of two key genetic components of expression vectors (promoter and signal peptide) on protein production and secretion effciency in HEK293 cells expressing eGFP as a reporter protein. Firstly, the strength of 3 different promoters was evaluated using transient expression methods. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that the highest level of intracellular protein expression was found when eGFP was under the control of CMV promoter, being 3-times higher in comparison to the rest of the promoters tested...

OBJECTIVE: Originally developed for the purpose of muscle strengthening, mainly for knee muscles, the isokinetic has gradually seen its scope expand to other joints, especially in muscle testing, becoming one of reference. Son methods applied to the pathology of the shoulder is relatively recent and, to date, the rules for implementing the tests and rehabilitation remain unclear. The aim of study is to define the contribution of the isokinetic evaluation in the management of shoulder tendon...

OBJECTIVE: Spasticity of the upper limb is a disabling symptom in patients with vascular hemiplegia, both functionally and orthopedic evolution of these patients. Many treatments exist for spasticity, and botulinum toxin may be an attractive therapeutic alternative, to fight against the often deleterious spasticity. MATERIAL/PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report a retrospective work of 10 spastic patients treated with ultrasound-guided injection of botulinum toxin into the MPR Casablanca service...

OBJECTIVE: we report the epidemiological characteristics, clinical and functional aspects in a group of 14 patients with tuberculous myelitis after functional rehabilitation. MATERIALS/PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over a period of 4 years, 14 cases of tuberculous myelitis were admitted for functional rehabilitation...

INTRODUCTION: Valvular calcifications are one of the major cardiovascular complications of hemodialysis because of its prevalence and its predictive indices of morbidity and mortality. There are many risk factors associated with these calcifications. Our study aims to evaluate both the prevalence of valvular calcifications in our patients on hemodialysis and their risk factors. METHODS: This was a single-center cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study of 111 adult patients who were on hemodialysis for more than 6 months at the hemodialysis center CHU Ibn Rushd, Casablanca and who underwent ETT during the year 2013...

This study aimed to determine the rate of intestinal carriage of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and to perform a phenotypic and genotypic characterisation of VRE isolates in the community in Casablanca, Morocco. During 6 months in 2014, 113 faecal samples were examined for the presence of enterococci. Antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was determined by the disk diffusion method. Phenotypic and genotypic species identification was performed, and the vanA, vanB and vanC genes were detected by PCR...

UNLABELLED: Squamous cell carcinoma can occur on a apparently healthy mucosa or be preceded by lesions Chronic called potentially malignant, often asymptomatic, rarely showing the reason for consultation of patients, particularly in our Moroccan background which is  characterized by a care difficulty of access and the absence of priority to oral health. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of diseases potentially and malignant squamous cell carcinomas, and the role of certain risk factors in the onset of these lesions...

This study examines the geographic variability in otolith shape of round sardinella Sardinella aurita as a tool for stock discrimination. Fish were analysed from six sampling locations from Senegal to the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. A combination of otolith shape indices and elliptic Fourier descriptors was investigated by multivariate statistical procedures. Within the studied area, three distinct groups were identified with an overall correct classification of 78%. Group A: Nador (Alboran Sea), group B: Casablanca (northern Morocco) and group C: Senegalese-Mauritanian...

The highest burden of pediatric vaccine-preventable disease is found in developing nations where resource constraints pose the greatest challenge, impacting disease diagnosis and surveillance as well as the implementation of large scale vaccination programmes. In November 2012, a Working Group Meeting convened in Casablanca to describe and discuss the status with respect to 8 vaccine-preventable diseases (pertussis, pneumococcal disease, measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV), rotavirus and meningococcal meningitis) to identify and consider ways of overcoming obstacles to pediatric vaccine implementation...

In this study, the presence of non-conventional yeast associated with vineyards located between latitudes 30°S and 36°S was examined, including the valleys of Limarí, Casablanca, Maipo, Colchagua, Maule, and Itata. The microbial fingerprinting in each valley was examined based on the specific quantification of yeast of enological interest. Grape-berries were sampled to evaluate the presence and load of non-conventional yeast with enological potential, such as Metschnikowia, Hanseniaspora, Torulaspora, Debaryomyces, Meyerozyma, and Rhodotorula...

Landfill location selection is a multi-criteria decision problem and has a strategic importance for many regions. The conventional methods for landfill location selection are insufficient in dealing with the vague or imprecise nature of linguistic assessment. To resolve this problem, fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making methods are proposed. The aim of this paper is to use fuzzy TODIM (the acronym for Interactive and Multi-criteria Decision Making in Portuguese) and the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methods for the selection of landfill location...

BACKGROUND: The study analyzes health care workers' (HCWs) occupational risk perception and compares exposure to occupational risk factors in Moroccan and French hospitals. METHOD: Across nine public hospitals from three Moroccan regions (north, center and south), a 49 item French questionnaire, based on the Job Content Questionnaire, and 4 occupational risks subscales, was distributed to 4746 HCWs. Internal consistency of the study was determined for each subscale...

In many Middle Pleistocene sites, the co-occurrence of hominins with carnivores, who both contributed to faunal accumulations, suggests competition for resources as well as for living spaces. Despite this, there is very little evidence of direct interaction between them to-date. Recently, a human femoral diaphysis has been recognized in South-West of Casablanca (Morocco), in the locality called Thomas Quarry I. This site is famous for its Middle Pleistocene fossil hominins considered representatives of Homo rhodesiensis...

INTRODUCTION: In orthodontic practice, the bonding protocol makes use of a primer between the bracket and the enamel surface to create a reliable bond. In order to optimize the technique and reduce bonding time, a new group of primers has been introduced in orthodontics: the self-etching primers (SEP). The aim of this work was to compare their efficacy with that of a traditional primer. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study is a single-center, single-blind, clinical trial using the SEP system on teeth 14 and 25 and the Ortho-Solo(®) system (traditional hydrophilic primer) on teeth 24 and 15 in the same patient...
