This study presents the implementation of an evanescent field (EF)-based sensing platform employing a hybrid film composed of graphene oxide (GO) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), integrated onto coreless D-shaped fibers (cDsFs). The operational framework of the hybrid film-coated cDsFs (GoP-cDsFs) was comprehensively elucidated through theoretical and experimental analyses. To establish a baseline for comparison, the performance of the cDsFs with the sole inclusion of the PMMA film was investigated. Our investigations underscore the substantive role of graphene oxide in augmenting the evanescent field, thereby generating a synergistic effect that contributes to the overall enhancement of the evanescent field in the device...

OBJECTIVES: This study compared, retrospectively, the incidence of clinical errors and effects on treatment outcomes, when students were exposed to two different instrumentation techniques: a hybrid rotary technique (HYB), consisting of both hand instrumentation with hand stainless steel and Ni-Ti files plus the use of a rotary system (Vortex Blue, Dentsply Sirona), versus a full reciprocation instrumentation technique (WaveOne Gold [WOG], Dentsply Sirona). METHODS: A total of 368 endodontic cases (n = 184) in anterior and premolar teeth, completed by dental students at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry from 2013 to 2022, were used for the study...

Advances in manufacturing technology coupled with the increased potency of new biotherapeutic modalities have created an external environment where continuous manufacturing (CM) can address a growing need. Amgen has successfully implemented a hybrid CM process for a commercial lifecycle program. In this process, the bioreactor, harvest, capture column, and viral inactivation/depth filtration unit operations were integrated together in an automated, continuous module, while the remaining downstream unit operations took place in stand-alone batch mode...

Almost 60% of oil and 40% of gas reserves worldwide are contained in carbonate reservoirs where acidizing stimulation is more challenging compared to sandstone reservoirs. Utilization of emulsified acids in matrix acidizing operations has been the most effective technique for more than half a century. This is due to the colloidal system's ability to generate deep, narrow conduits toward production zones under controlled retarded reactivity with the rock surface, along with the excellent sweep efficiency and corrosion inhibition of the well equipment...

BACKGROUND: Transvenous embolization of high-grade dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) is challenging particularly when the direct sinus access is favorable due to the complex venous anatomy which prohibits endovascular access via the transfemoral approach. METHOD: The procedure was conducted in the hybrid operating suite, where a burr hole was performed, followed by direct catheterization of the superior sagittal sinus. Coil embolization was then executed to achieve complete obliteration of the fistula...

Left ventricular (LV) unloading has been shown to improve survival for patients requiring veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) support for cardiogenic shock. A mortality benefit has been shown for ECMO and concomitant placement of a transcatheter unloading LV pump such as an Impella device (colloquially referred to as ECPELLA or ECMELLA) for patients resuscitated with VA ECMO after a short period of cardiac arrest. Despite the described benefit of LV unloading with VA ECMO for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, it remains unclear as to what criteria should be used and what other diagnostic and therapeutic adjuncts may be useful...

The gene localization technique of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (pinewood nematode, PWN) is used for study gene expression in PWNs. Two in situ hybridization methods, namely, whole-mount in situ hybridization and the cut-off method are used widely. To compare the effects of these two in situ hybridization methods, the present study investigated the patterns of two functional genes expression in PWNs. The Bx-vap-2 gene (GenBank accession number: OR228482), related to pathogenicity, and the fem-2 gene (GenBank accession number: OR228481), related to sex determination, were selected to map related genes in the whole-mount and amputated PWNs at different ages using these in situ hybridization methods...

In this paper, a critical issue related to power management control in autonomous hybrid systems is presented. Specifically, challenges in optimizing the performance of energy sources and backup systems are proposed, especially under conditions of heavy loads or low renewable energy output. The problem lies in the need for an efficient control mechanism that can enhance power availability while protecting and extending the lifespan of the various power sources in the system. Furthermore, it is necessary to adapt the system's operations to variations in climatic conditions for sustained effectiveness...

A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) serves as a robust framework for addressing multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). However, it is widely recognized that the applicability of a fixed offspring-generating strategy in MOEA/D can be limited, despite its foundation in the MOEA/D methodology. Consequently, hybrid algorithms have gained popularity in recent years. This study proposes a novel hyper-heuristic approach that integrates the estimation of distribution (ED) and crossover (CX) strategies into the MOEA/D framework based on the view of successful replacement rate (SSR) and attempts to explain the potential reasons for the advantages of hybrid algorithms...

Hybrid CMOS (hCMOS) x-ray framing cameras are a new and powerful detector option for experiments in the fields of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density Physics (HEDP). These digital cameras capture multiple images along a single line-of-sight with a time resolution as short as 1.5 ns and with high quantum efficiency. To manage the high data rate, an image sequence is acquired in a short burst of time and subsequently read out on a much longer time scale. The technology is well suited for operating in high radiation environments, including fusion ignition experiments...

Chemical and biological syntheses can both lead to a myriad of compounds. Biology enables us to harness the metabolism of microbial cell factories to produce key target molecules from renewable biomass-derived substrates. Although bio-based feedstocks are sustainably sourced and more benign than the rapidly depleting fossil fuels that chemical processes have historically relied on, limiting pathways solely to biological reactions may not equate to a greener process overall. In fact, bioreactors rely on substantial quantities of water and can be inefficient since organisms typically operate around ambient conditions and are sensitive to perturbations in their environment...

Hybrid-ORs are usually equipped with CBCT devices providing both 2D and 3D imaging capability that can be used for both interventional radiology and image guided surgical applications. Across all fields of surgery, the use of hybrid-ORs is gaining in traction, and neurosurgery is no exception. The Mouse Phenome Database continues to serve as a curated repository and analysis suite for measured attributes of members of diverse mouse populations. The repository includes annotation to community standard ontologies and guidelines, a database of allelic states for 657 mouse strains, a collection of protocols, and analysis tools for flexible, interactive, user directed analyses that increasingly integrates data across traits and populations. The database has grown from its initial focus on a standard set of inbred strains to include heterogeneous mouse populations such as the Diversity Outbred and mapping crosses and well as Collaborative Cross, Hybrid Mouse Diversity Panel, and recombinant inbred strains...

The antenna structure comprises centrally positioned rectangular DRs, one above the other, along with a 7 × 7 square-slotted metasurface. The metasurface and DRs are hosted above a grounded substrate, which is fed through a single coaxial feed placed at a specific angle, employing a modified upper probe of the coaxial feed...
