Profunda femoris artery aneurysms are a rare form of peripheral arterial aneurysm. In this report, we present the case of an 83-year-old lady who was found to have a 65 mm aneurysm arising from the proximal left profunda femoris artery and associated pseudoaneurysm. Successful treatment was achieved using an endovascular approach in which two stents were deployed.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There are limited data on the comparison of body compositions between diabetic and non-diabetic patients. We aimed to compare the muscle mass and fat parameters measured by ultrasonography (USG) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) between older palliative care patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study. We recorded the demographics, comorbidities, blood pressures, microvascular complications, pressure injuries, ambulation and nutritional status, and laboratory parameters...

Tendon properties impact human locomotion, influencing sports performance, and injury prevention. Hamstrings play a crucial role in sprinting, particularly the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), which is prone to frequent injuries. It remains uncertain if BFlh exhibits distinct mechanical properties compared to other hamstring muscles. This study utilized free-hand three-dimensional ultrasound to assess morphological and mechanical properties of distal hamstrings tendons in 15 men. Scans were taken in prone position, with hip and knee extended, at rest and during 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the knee flexors...

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine changes in the muscle and tendon stiffness of the thigh and lower leg muscle-tendon units during the early follicular and early luteal phases, and check for possible relations between muscle and tendon stiffness in each phase. METHODS: The sample consisted of 15 female university students with regular menstrual cycles. The basal body temperature method, ovulation kit, and salivary estradiol concentration measurement were used to estimate the early follicular and early luteal phases...

Knowledge of the primary structure of neuronal NO synthase (nNOS) in skeletal muscle is still conflicting and needs further clarification. To elucidate the expression patterns of nNOS isoforms at both mRNA and protein level, systematic RT-PCR and epitope mapping by qualitative immunoblot analysis on skeletal muscle of C57/BL6 mice were performed. The ability of the nNOS isoforms to form aggregates was characterized by native low-temperature polyacrylamide electrophoresis (LT-PAGE). The molecular analysis was focused on the rectus femoris (RF) muscle, a skeletal muscle with a nearly balanced ratio of nNOS alpha- and beta-isoforms...

This study aimed to investigate the impact of the Nordic hamstring exercises (NHE) on acute fatigue-induced alterations in the mechanical and morphological properties of hamstring muscles. The second aim was to define the blood flow and perfusion after NHE in recreational active volunteers. Twenty-two individuals volunteered to participate in the study. This study investigated fatigue outcomes: rate of perceived exertion (RPE) scale and average force generated during NHE; mechanical properties (stiffness); morphological properties (thickness, pennation angle, and fascicle length), and vascularity index (VI) of the semitendinosus (ST) and biceps femoris long head (BFLH) at baseline, immediately post-exercise and 1-h post-exercise...

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) usually leads to quadriceps femoris atrophy, which in turn can further aggravate the progression of KOA. Curcumin (CUR) has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and has been shown to be a protective agent for skeletal muscle. CUR has been shown to have a protective effect on skeletal muscle. However, there are no studies related to whether CUR improves KOA-induced quadriceps femoris muscle atrophy. We established a model of KOA in rats. Rats in the experimental group were fed CUR for 5 weeks...

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries are associated with significant time away from sport and high reinjury rates. Recent evidence suggests that hamstring injuries often occur during accelerative running, but investigations of hamstring mechanics have primarily examined constant speed running on a treadmill. To help fill this gap in knowledge, this study compares hamstring lengths and lengthening velocities between accelerative running and constant speed overground running. METHODS: We recorded 2 synchronized videos of 10 participants (5 female, 5 male) during 6 accelerative running trials and 6 constant speed running trials...

OBJECTIVE: Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is a progressive late-onset muscle disease characterised by preferential weakness of quadriceps femoris and finger flexors, with elusive causes involving immune, degenerative, genetic and age-related factors. Overlapping with normal muscle ageing makes diagnosis and prognosis problematic. METHODS: We characterised peripheral blood leucocytes in 81 IBM patients and 45 healthy controls using flow cytometry. BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent and debilitating condition that markedly affects the sit-to-stand (STS) activity of patients, a prerequisite for daily activities. Biomechanical recognition of movements in patients with mild KOA is currently attracting attention. However, limited studies have been conducted solely on the observed differences in sagittal plane movement and muscle activation. AIM: This study aimed to identify three-dimensional biomechanical and muscle activation characteristics of the STS activity in patients with mild KOA...

OBJECTIVES: Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) commonly affect the proximal biceps femoris long head (BFlh) musculotendinous junction. Biomechanical modeling suggests narrow proximal BFlh aponeuroses and large muscle-to-aponeurosis width ratios increase localized tissue strains and presumably risk of HSI. This study aimed to determine if BFlh muscle and proximal aponeurosis geometry differed between limbs with and without a history of HSI. METHODS: Twenty-six recreationally active males with (n = 13) and without (n = 13) a history of unilateral HSI in the last 24 months underwent magnetic resonance imaging of both thighs...

A 14-year-old intact male Chihuahua dog was presented with masses located between the biceps femoris and adductor muscles in both hind limbs. Based on histopathological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings, we diagnosed these masses as bilateral hibernomas in the femoral regions. The dog had no evidence of recurrence or metastasis of the hibernomas through a 4-month postoperative follow-up. This is apparently the first report of bilateral hibernomas in the femoral regions of a dog. Key clinical message: Bilateral hibernomas should be considered as a differential diagnosis for masses occurring in the femoral regions of dogs...

INTRODUCTION: Lower Cross Syndrome (LCS) is a prevalent condition that manifests as muscular tension due to the asymmetry in the strength of the lower extremity muscles. This imbalance could be due to the tautness of the iliopsoas, rectus femoris, tensor fascia latae, adductor group, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles. LCS causes a postural imbalance in the individual, which triggers low back pain (LBP). When LCS is present alongside LBP, may cause the upper body to sway more in the transverse plane and at the lumbar level, making walking and termination of gait (GT) more difficult...

Avulsion fractures of the anterior inferior iliac spine rarely occur in adolescent athletes during rectus femoris contractions or eccentric muscle lengthening while the growth plate is still open. Currently, there are no official guidelines in the literature on the treatment indications of this type of fracture or the type of surgical technique to be used. Nowadays, young and athletic patients desire a quick return to their previous activities, which makes surgical treatment a reasonable choice. Open reduction and internal fixation with an anterior approach are usually recommended when the avulsion fragment has more than 1...
