Complex structures and devices, both natural and artificial, can often undergo assembly and disassembly. Assembly and disassembly allow multiple stimuli to initiate, for example, the assembly and disassembly of primary cilia under the control of E3 ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinases. Although biology relies on such schemes, they are rarely available in materials science. Here, we demonstrate a DNA-functionalized colloidal Au response to endogenous biomarkers to trigger simultaneous assembly and disassembly techniques...

BACKGROUND: Older individuals with functional decline and homecare are frequent visitors to emergency departments (ED). Homecare workers (HCWs) interact regularly with their clients and may play a crucial role in their well-being. Therefore, this study explores if and how HCWs perceive they may contribute to the prevention of ED visits among their clients. METHODS: In this qualitative study, 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted with HCWs from Sweden between July and November 2022...

Our objective was to understand how maternal age influences the mitochondrial population and ATP content of in vivo matured bovine oocytes. We hypothesized that in vivo matured oocytes from older cows would have altered mitochondrial number and distribution patterns and lower cytoplasmic ATP content compared to the oocytes obtained from younger cows. Follicles ≥5mm were ablated in old cows (13 to 22 yrs, Old Group, n = 7) and their younger daughters (4 to 10 years old, Young Group; n = 7) to induce the emergence of a new follicular wave...

There have been great strides in psychology regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and multicultural competence, but a need remains to translate these values into actionable practices in psychotherapy. While the case has been made that measurement-based care is an evidence-based intervention that improves outcomes and reduces dropouts (de Jong et al., 2021) and recently that it provides a transparent collaborative process to engage clients in treatment (Boswell et al., 2023), it has not been widely considered as a methodology for multicultural competence...

BACKGROUND: Quality of life and care varies between and within the care homes in which almost half a million older people live and over half a million direct care staff (registered nurses and care assistants) work. The reasons are complex, understudied and sometimes oversimplified, but staff and their work are a significant influence. OBJECTIVE(S): To explore variations in the care home nursing and support workforce; how resident and relatives' needs in care homes are linked to care home staffing; how different staffing models impact on care quality, outcomes and costs; how workforce numbers, skill mix and stability meet residents' needs; the contributions of the care home workforce to enhancing quality of care; staff relationships as a platform for implementation by providers...

Background Handoffs between medical providers serve a crucial patient safety function. While most published literature on the topic studies the handover process among physicians, robust literature is available on interdisciplinary medical communication. Little is known about the downstream effects of effective physician handover on subsequent physician and nursing interactions. Objective Our objective was to implement a handoff curriculum, SAFETIPS (Statistics, Assessment, Focused plan, pertinent Exam findings, To dos, If/thens, Pointers/pitfalls, and Severity of illness), for pediatric residents and to investigate its impact on nurses' perceptions of resident preparedness, efficiency, and competency...

In social settings, anger can lead to aggressive and hostile in the absence of adequate social competences. Our study aims to examine the moderating role of perceived social competences in the association between psychological distress and anger expression (trait anger, hostility, physical aggression, and verbal aggression) among a sample of Lebanese adults. Streptomyces are a genus of ubiquitous soil bacteria from which the majority of clinically utilized antibiotics derive1 . The production of these antibacterial molecules reflects the relentless competition Streptomyces engage in with other bacteria, including other Streptomyces species1,2 . Here we show that in addition to small-molecule antibiotics, Streptomyces produce and secrete antibacterial protein complexes that feature a large, degenerate repeat-containing polymorphic toxin protein. A cryo-electron microscopy structure of these particles reveals an extended stalk topped by a ringed crown comprising the toxin repeats scaffolding five lectin-tipped spokes, which led us to name them umbrella particles...

Fragment-based screening has become indispensable in drug discovery. Yet, the weak binding affinities of these small molecules still represent a challenge for the reliable detection of fragment hits. The extent of this issue was illustrated in the literature for the aspartic protease endothiapepsin: When seven biochemical and biophysical in vitro screening methods were applied to screen a library of 361 fragments, very poor overlap was observed between the hit fragments identified by the individual approaches, resulting in high levels of false positive and/or false negative results depending on the mutually compared methods...

RIG-I-like receptors and NOD-like receptors play pivotal roles in recognizing microbe-associated molecular patterns and initiating immune responses. The LGP2 and NOD2 proteins are important members of the RIG-I-like receptor and NOD-like receptor families, recognizing viral RNA and bacterial peptidoglycan (PGN), respectively. However, in some instances bacterial infections can induce LPG2 expression via a mechanism that remains largely unknown. In the current study, we found that LGP2 can compete with NOD2 for PGN binding and inhibit antibacterial immunity by suppressing the NOD2-RIP2 axis...

Six previous factor analyses have been reported in the literature, yet all have major limitations; evidence for the clear superiority of any of the competing theories is insufficient and warrants further investigation. The primary aim of the present research was to identify dimensions that cut across schizotypy and ASCs while addressing limitations of past research...
