INTRODUCTION: Entering medical school can be a stressful transition for students. Similarly, few students have experience in anatomical coursework. To ease this burden, pre-matriculation programs, particularly focusing on anatomy, have been created at other universities. In 2021, the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) implemented a pre-matriculation program (termed the Leadership and Academic Development Scholars; LEAD Scholars) targeting under-represented students in medicine (URiM)...

The 2020 U.S. Census data show a rapidly diversifying U.S. population. We sought to evaluate whether clinical faculty and leadership representation at academic medical schools reflects the diversifying population over time. Using data from the Association of American Medical Colleges for the period of 1977 through 2019, we found notable progress in female representation among clinical faculty, with smaller gains among department chairs and medical school deans. Racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in medicine are designated as such because their presence within the medical profession is disproportionate to the U...

Medical schools have an important directive: to train the next generation of physicians. Faced with a primary care physician shortage, increasing numbers of under-represented faculty leaving academic medicine, low representation of women in leadership positions, and an ongoing pandemic, medical schools have a duty to implement solutions to alleviate these issues. Efforts have been made to create more diverse medical school classes, but those efforts are not mirrored in senior faculty demographics. In this medical students' perspective piece, the authors analyzed the demographics of medical school deans in comparison with the United States' demographics and the current composition of active physicians...

INTRODUCTION: Post-deployment health surveys completed by military personnel ask about a range of deployment experiences. These surveys are conducted to determine if there are links between experiences and poor health. Responses to open-ended questions in these surveys can identify experiences that might otherwise go unreported. These responses may increase knowledge about a particular deployment and inform future surveys. This study documented deployment experiences described by Australian Defence Force personnel who were deployed to the Middle East...

Many medical schools are instituting gender equity initiatives to address long-standing inequities (e.g., salary, leadership positions, resource distribution) between women and men in academic medicine. However, few theory-driven models exist with built-in metrics to assess the impact of gender equity initiatives. The authors describe the theory- and metric-driven process utilized to create the Center for Women in Medicine and Science (CWIMS) at the University of Minnesota Medical School (UMN). An innovative theory-driven approach using community-based participatory research (CBPR) was used to create and organize CWIMS...
