REVIEW
Slavica Naumovski-Mihalić
BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis is an autodigestive disease in which the pancreatic tissue is damaged by the digestive enzimes produces by the acinar cells and is associated with severe upper abdominal pain. The severity of acute pancreatitis ranges from edema to necrosis of the gland. The edematous form of the disease occurs in about 80-85% of patients and is self-limited, with recovery in few days. In the 15-20% of patients with the most severe form of pancreatitis, hospitalization is prolonged and commonly associated with infection and other complications including multiple organ failure...

UNLABELLED: Drospirenone--a new 17 alpha-spironolactone derivate is a progestin with aldosterone receptor antagonism activity (PARA) thanks to which it decreases sodium and fluid retention. THE AIM: The aim of our study was to estimate the electrolytes level and renal function parameters in blood during the therapy of low dose oral contraceptive containing drospirenone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The group consisted of 22 young women in mean age 25,9 +/- 4,3 years, without contraindications to hormonal contraception used specimen containing 20 microg ethinyloestradiol and 3...

AIM: The aim of our paper was to observe the physical and chemical changes in the aqueous humor, lens, gelatous and fluid part of the vitreous body after the sulfurhexafluoride injection into the vitreous body. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The New Zealand rabbits were randomized into the control and experimental group which were injected the gas into the vitreous body. The interesting samples were investigated during the 2nd, 7th and 14th day of the experiment. We estimated the volume of the fluid part of the vitreous body, its electrical resistance, the whole protein concentration (in the aqueous humor, lens and vitreous), and electrolite concentration (in the aqueous humor and fluid part of the vitreous body)...

The cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples, taken at 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes after multiple electrolitic lesions of lateral habenular (LHB) lesions or of thalamus, performed in urethane anesthetized cats, were assayed for their antidiuretic and hydroosmotic activities before and after trypsine or thioglycollate incubation. LHB but not thalamic lesions, specifically induced the appearance of antidiuretic and hydroosmotic activities at 60 and 120 minutes. The activities decreased under the bioassays sensibilities at 180 minutes...

In ten dogs and seven patients undergoing open heart surgery, 94% of circulatory volume was replaced by electrolitic solutions; extracted blood was stored temporarily at 5degreesC. Usage of blood was avoided for replacement of extracorporeal fluid circuit and blood lost during surgery. After cardiopulmonar bypass, storage blood was transfused. In both experimental and clinical conditions neither renal, electrolitic nor blood alterations were observed.

The authors make a sum-up of all cases of delirium tremens admitted to the Lausanne University Psychiatric Clinic during the period 1970-1974. All were treated by intravenous and oral chlormethiazole (hemineurine), its technique being described. The need to restablish the fluid and electrolitic balance is stressed. Side effects are not important and there is a shortening of the acute phase, as compared to other techniques. Mortality is nil. The authors suggest that chlormethiazole is an indication of choice in the treatment of delirium tremens and are surprised that this substance has not yet taken its place in the U...
