INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the deadliest diseases in the European Union. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard of CRC screening. Analysis of colonoscopy-related Google Trends (GT; Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States) data could provide useful information regarding interest in colonoscopy and potential barriers making patients unwilling to attend screening programs. METHODS: Data were collected using GT for the main search term "colonoscopy" and the two most related queries...

BACKGROUND: As the number of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) increases, the incidence of IBD-related colorectal cancer (CRC) is also on the rise. Crohn's disease (CD)-related CRC has been reported to have a poorer prognosis than sporadic CRC, and the early detection of CD-related CRC is difficult. Japanese patients with CD are reported to have a higher frequency of anorectal cancer than the Western population; however, methods for early diagnosis have not yet been established because of perianal pain during the examination...

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of distraction methods on pain, anxiety, and satisfaction during a colonoscopy. DESIGN: This experimental research was conducted as a single-center, randomized, parallel-group trial. METHODS: A total of 120 patients were recruited and randomized into 4 groups (music, stress ball, audiovisual distraction, and control). The data were collected using individual an identification form, observation form, the Visual Analog Scale, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory...

Chronic constipation can lead to fecal impaction in the large bowel, which can cause pressure necrosis followed by perforation, known as a stercoral ulcer. In extensive posterior thoracolumbar surgery, a long operation time, large blood loss, and perioperative narcotic use may aggravate constipation. Moreover, sacral root palsy due to cauda equina syndrome (CES) can lead to the deterioration of fecal impaction. This report describes the case of a 77-year-old woman with CES who presented with saddle anesthesia, neurogenic bladder, bowel incontinence, and paraplegia...

Objective: Colonoscopy plays an important role in the diagnosis, prognosis prediction, assessment of disease activity and severity, and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-related complications. However, some patients refuse to undergo colonoscopy due to perceived pain and other discomfort, their diagnosis and treatment are affected. Therefore, we conducted a prospective study to explore the efficacy and safety of midazolam combined with dezocine for sedation in IBD patients undergoing colonoscopy...

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy becomes more and more common now in order to diagnose and treat GI diseases, and anesthesia/sedation plays an important role. We aim to discuss the developmental trends and evaluate the research hotspots using bibliometric methods for GI endoscopy anesthesia/sedation in the past two decades. METHODS: The original and review articles published from 2001 to December 2022 related to GI endoscopy anesthesia/sedation were extracted from the Web of Science database...

Foreign body in the anal canal may be inserted for sexual gratification or sexual assault or accidental or drug trafficking. We report a case of a male who accidentally inserted a cough syrup bottle in his rectum. Presentation is usually late due to fear and embarrassment. The manual attempt of removal may be tried under adequate anesthesia. Post-procedure sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy may be helpful to diagnose laceration or mucosal injury.

BACKGROUND: The effect of COVID-19 infection on post-operative mortality and the optimal timing to perform ambulatory surgery from diagnosis date remains unclear in this population. BACKGROUND: By continually monitoring end-tidal carbon dioxide concentrations, capnography can detect abnormal ventilation or apnoea early. This randomized, controlled study explored the effect of early intervention with capnography on the incidence of hypoxia in mildly obese patients undergoing sedation for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy. METHODS: This is a single-center, randomized, single-blind, parallel-assignment, controlled trial. Mildly obese patients (28 kg/m2  ≤ BMI < 40 kg/m2 ) undergoing sedation for EGD and colonoscopy were randomly assigned to either the standard or capnography group...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for sedation-related respiratory depression during colonoscopy. In a colonoscopy, propofol is frequently used because of its strong sedative and hypnotic properties. However, propofol is associated with marked respiratory depression. The objective of this trial was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of dexmedetomidine plus oxycodone for conscious sedation during colonoscopy in obese patients. METHODS: A total of 120 patients had colonoscopies, and they were divided into two groups at random: Dexmedetomidine and oxycodone were used to sedate group Dex + oxy; while group Pro + oxy received anesthesia with propofol plus oxycodone...

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease, a chronic gastrointestinal inflammatory condition, can involve gynecological structures. Rectovaginal or rectovestibular involvement may be the first sign in the pediatric population and may result in delayed diagnosis and treatment. BACKGROUND: Rectal diverticula are a very rare occurrence compared to diverticula of the colon. They are reported to account for only 0.08% of all diverticulosis. Diverticula of the rectum can be caused by congenital or acquired factors. The majority are asymptomatic, diagnosed incidentally, and require no treatment. The low incidence of rectal diverticulosis may be attributed to the unique anatomical structure and physiological environment of the rectum. However, complications can arise and may necessitate surgical or endoscopic treatment...

BACKGROUND: Butorphanol slightly influences the respiratory and circulatory systems, has a better effect on relieving the discomfort caused by mechanical traction, and has a low incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Combined butorphanol and propofol may suppress postoperative visceral pain, which is avoidable in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
