Backgrounds: The circadian clock protein Rev-erbα is a crucial regulator of circadian rhythms that affects multiple molecular, cellular, and physiology pathways that control susceptibility, injury, and recovery in the neurological disorders. Emerging evidence suggest that Rev-erbα plays a key role in the inflammation and oxidative stress, two pivotal mechanisms in the pathogenesis, progression, and recovery process of ischemic stroke. However, it remains inconclusive whether Rev-erbα activation is protective against ischemic brain damage...

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) BamHI-A rightward transcripts, or BARTs, are a family of mRNAs expressed in all EBV latency programs, including EBV-infected B cells in healthy carriers. Despite their ubiquitous expression, the regulation and biological function of BARTs are still unclear. In this study, the BART 5' termini were characterized by using a procedure that selects capped, full-length mRNAs. Two TATA-less promoter regions, designated P1 and P2, were mapped. P1 had relatively high basal activity in both epithelial and B cells, whereas P2 exhibited higher activity in epithelial cells...

Vitamin D malabsorption could be one possible reason for the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and osteopenia in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and pancreatic insufficiency (PI). Hence, we performed a modified 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) absorption test Stamp in 15 healthy controls, 31 patients with CD and 10 patients with PI. Serum 25-OHD levels were measured before, and 2, 4, 8, and 24 hours after oral administration of 5 micrograms 25-OHD/kg body weight. Basal 25-OHD levels were below the normal range of 12-36 ng/ml in 68% of patients with CD (median: 10; interquartile range: 4-12 ng/ml) and 70% of patients with PI (median: 3; interquartile range: 2-14 ng/ml)...

Treatment of rats with colchicine (0.5 mg/100 g of body weight) for more than 3 hr causes formation of microvillus borders along lateral and basal surfaces of absorptive cells in the small intestine. Morphologically, these strongly resemble the apical brush border inclusive of the terminal-web region. Formation of basolateral microvilli is restricted to mature absorptive cells. At 6 hr after administration of colchicine, 3.47% (+/- 1.94%) of the basolateral cell surfaces exhibit "implantation" of microvillus borders...
