BACKGROUND: Septal surgery (SP) is one of the most frequently performed operations in Germany and thus represents a high cost burden for the health system. However, sufficient data on postoperative patient satisfaction and objective indication criteria for surgery are still lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine postoperative patient satisfaction and possible factors influencing the subjective success of SP, in order to optimize preoperative indication establishment...

The septumplasty is realized inpatient and outpatient in different countries. Caused by the pressure of reduction of expenses there is the question of the economic benefit if done outpatient in Germany. A comparison of the inpatient and outpatient gratification will be done. There is a yearly potential of cost reduction of 180 million euro, if the operation would be done as an outpatient procedure. From the hospital view actual there is no economical recommendation doing an outpatient septumplasty caused by the poor outpatient remuneration...

BACKGROUND: Individual septal buttons have gained more attention during the last years. However, experiences in patients being treated by an individual septal button are limited. Therefore, further evaluation of this treatment option is needed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Records of 64 patients being treated by an individual septal button were evaluated retrospectively. As the silicon prints of the septum perforation were available size of the septal perforation were measured...

The following article presents nasal septum and turbinate surgery. First an overview with special consideration of the anatomical and physiological background is given followed by indications for surgical procedures. Key steps of the gold standard procedure first described by Cottle and common variations are presented. Furthermore, some techniques dealing with special problems of the septumplasty are discussed followed by an overview on complications and long term results. However, it should be mentioned that studies on surgical procedures of the nasal septum are still not sufficient as higher evidence levels are very rare...

BACKGROUND: This work examines the application possibilities of the panoramic visualization system (HD-PVS) in ENT surgery. The HD-PVS is a new optical system that is neither an endoscope nor a microscope. It has a focal length of 200 mm and a wide field of view. PATIENT AND METHODS: The analysis of the visualization quality took place under laboratory conditions at 4 close-to-surgery scenarios with a total of 40 result values. Furthermore, the system was used for 45 operative procedures on patients (tympanoplasty, parotidectomy, neck dissection, septumplasty, transfacial approaches)...

The Panoramic Visualization System (PVS) is a novel optical system that is neither an endoscope nor a microscope. BACKGROUND: The aetiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate neutrophil-attracting chemokine patterns in CRS without nasal polyposis. METHODS: The biological activity of the chemokines was identified using a two-step high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique combined with a bioassay in extracts from 55 CRS patients, and in the turbinate mucosa (TM) of patients (N=51) undergoing septumplasty...

Many papers describe different approaches for short columella in cleft lip or Negroid noses. Very little has been found in international literature related to these aesthetic rhinoplasties. The scarce skin of the columella, the firm union between the nasal tip and the lip, due to the hypertrophy of the depressor septi nasi muscle, and the low projection of the nasal tip, consequence of the open position of the caudal part of the medial crura, are the cause of this problem. Therefore, the skin, muscle, and cartilage were treated simultaneously...

Endonasal sinus surgery in the case of inflammatory disease is of increasing importance. The maxillary, ethmoid, sphenoid and frontal sinus operations as well as the septumplasty are performed microsurgically. There are only few indications, when the intranasal procedure cannot be applied. We prefer all intranasal operations with the patient placed in semi-Fowler's position with hypotensive anaesthesia. Out of a total of 310 cases in which endonasal microsurgery was performed, 251 were submitted to a retrospective study 12-36 months after the operation...

The histological findings of the crushed deviated septal cartilage and bone are described directly after reimplantation between the mucoperichondrium periostium in septoplasty, and after 11, 16, 24 and 26 months as well as after 6 and 6.5 years. Immediately after crushing, multiple fractures different in width and damage of single cartilage cells and bone cells are visible. The crushed reimplanted material shows partial absorption and partial regeneration especially near the fracture lines over a period of several years...
