BACKGROUND: Risk factors contributing to upper limb repetitive stress injuries (RSIs) have been well-documented in literature, but there has been no such data in Singapore. OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential contributory factors to upper limb RSIsMETHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of clients who were referred to outpatient upper limb rehabilitation in 2012. Demographic information was retrieved from an electronic documentation system. Descriptive analyses were performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 17...

AIM: To report the presentation of complex regional pain syndrome-1 (CRPS-1) as deQuervain's stenosing tenosynovitis (DQST). CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old woman presented with 3-year history of clinical diagnostic criteria (CDC) of CRPS-1. Conservative and surgical treatment for this as DQST had failed to relieve her. We diagnosed the problem as CRPS-1with CDC as inflammatory manifestations of a mechanical tendinoses of all her 5 digital tendons caused by movement of the fingers and hand tethered by agonist (flexor)/ antagonist (extensor) muscles in co-contraction...

PURPOSE: As ambulatory surgery becomes increasingly common, there is growing interest in assessing, monitoring, and tracking complications that occur secondary to outpatient procedures. We sought to determine the rates of 14- and 30-day acute care visits for surgical site infection after outpatient hand surgery, and to identify associated factors. METHODS: Using the California State Ambulatory Surgery database for 2010 and 2011, we identified 44,305 patients undergoing common outpatient hand surgery procedures...

DeQuervain's disease of the first dorsal compartment of the wrist, is a common wrist pathology, pain results from resisted gliding of the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis tendon in the fibroosseous canal. Management of resistant cases of DeQuervain's disease with failed conservative treatment treated by surgical decompression yield satisfactory outcomes. A large number of patients being dissatisfied with the medical treatment, still present with persistent pain and positive clinical finding...

DeQuervain's stenosing tenovaginitis is a common condition. Nonsurgical treatment by corticosteroid injection has significantly improved the management of this disease. The authors describe a case of subcutaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon at the wrist, three months after two corticosteroid injections for DeQuervain's stenosing tenovaginitis. The etiological history has not found any trauma history of the wrist. The aim of our work is to draw attention to this rare complication and discuss its therapeutic management...

BACKGROUND: Betel quid chewing is common in Taiwan. The work of betel quid preparers is characterized by long hours of static work, awkward working posture and highly repetitive hand/wrist motion. However, the musculoskeletal health of betel quid preparers receives very little attention. METHODS: The Chinese version of the Standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was administered, and electrogoniometers and electromyography were used in this cross-sectional study to characterize the hand/wrist motion of the subjects...

INTRODUCTION: Intra-lesional glucocorticosteroid (GCS) injections are used widely for painful musculoskeletal conditions in general practice. CASE: A 26 year old female, was given an intra-lesional injection of 24 mg methyl prednisolone acetate (MPA) with 15 mg lidocaine for treatment of DeQuervain's tenosynovitis. She was six weeks postpartum and predominantly breast feeding. Lactation was suppressed at approximately 30 h post injection and this persisted for a period of approximately 36 h before spontaneous resumption of milk production...

BACKGROUND: Few prospective cohort studies of distal upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders have been performed. Past studies have provided somewhat conflicting evidence for occupational risk factors and have largely reported data without adjustments for many personal and psychosocial factors. METHODS/DESIGN: A multi-center prospective cohort study was incepted to quantify risk factors for distal upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders and potentially develop improved methods for analyzing jobs...

BACKGROUND: Membranous expression of the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) is a prerequisite for iodide uptake in thyrocytes. Previous studies reported heterogeneous results on the relative frequency of staining in various pathological conditions of the thyroid. The present study aimed at determining membranous staining by using confocal laser microscopy in benign and malignant thyroid diseases, complemented in a subgroup of patients with recurrent or metastatic disease with functional findings of radioiodine uptake (RIU)...

We report a previously healthy 43 yr old male who presented with prolonged fever, weight loss and neck pain for 3 weeks. Even after extensive work up for the possible causes of pyrexia, the cause remained elusive. In view of persistent tachycardia and neck pain, possibility of subacute thyroiditis was suspected. Thyroid function test (TFT) revealed thyrotoxicosis, which on further evaluation was found to be secondary to DeQuervains thyroiditis. He was treated with NSAIDs, beta-blockers and steroids. He improved rapidly but went on to develop hypothyroidism on follow-up and required levothyroxine replacement...

METHODS: GPs recruited patients with hand or wrist problems and completed a standardized form recording information about patient history, observations, palpation, and physical tests. Patients were sent a questionnaire at baseline, 3, and 12 months, containing questions on characteristics and symptom severity...

The evaluation of chronic wrist pain can be a diagnostic dilemma. Lidocaine injections combined with corticosteroids are often used for both diagnosis and therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine if a midcarpal injection of lidocaine could serve as a diagnostic tool in patients with chronic wrist pain. Specifically, the relationship of pain relief from the injection and improvement of grip strength were compared to the presence of intracarpal pathology as confirmed by wrist arthroscopy. Forty-five patients with chronic wrist pain underwent a midcarpal injection of lidocaine with or without corticosteroids...

Participation in the sport of rowing has been steadily increasing in recent decades, yet few studies address the specific injuries incurred. This article reviews the most common injuries described in the literature, including musculoskeletal problems in the lower back, ribs, shoulder, wrist and knee. A review of basic rowing physiology and equipment is included, along with a description of the mechanics of the rowing stroke. This information is necessary in order to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment protocol for these injuries, which are mainly chronic in nature...
