The modulation of mitochondrial functions is important for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Mitochondria essentially depend on the import of RNAs and proteins encoded by the nuclear genome. MicroRNAs encoded in the nucleus can translocate to mitochondria and target the genome, affecting mitochondrial function. Here, we analyzed the role of miR-4485 in the regulation of mitochondrial functions. We showed that miR-4485 translocated to mitochondria where its levels varied in response to different stress conditions...

Hydatidosis is caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Humans may be infected incidentally as intermediate host by the accidental consumption of soil, water, or food contaminated by fecal matter of an infected animal. Hydatidosis is one of the most symptomatic parasitic infections in various livestock - raising countries. Lung is the second most commonly affected organ following the liver. The symptoms depend on the size and site of the lesion. It can present as an asymptomatic pulmonary lesion to hemoptysis, chest pain, coughing anaphylaxis, and shock...

BACKGROUND: We previously characterized in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) a novel population of cancer stem cells (CSCs) marked by coexpression of 2 stemness genes, sex-determining region Y (SRY)-related HMG box-containing factor 10 (SOX10) and CD133. We also reported that in ACC and basal-like breast carcinoma (BBC), a triple-negative breast cancer subtype, expression of SOX10 similarly demarcates a highly conserved gene signature enriched with neural stem cell genes. On the basis of these findings, we hypothesized that BBC might be likewise driven by SOX10-positive (SOX10(+))/CD133(+) cells with neural stem cell properties...

GATA3, as a transcription factor, is associated with estrogen receptor (ER) expression and necessary for luminal cell differentiation in mammary glands. Association of GATA3 expression with clinicopathological parameters, molecular subtypes of tumors, disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) for breast carcinoma patients were evaluated in this study. We immunohistochemically stained GATA3, CK5/6, EGFR, CK14 and vimentin on tissue microarray blocks of 457 invasive breast carcinomas. Tumors are sub-classified as luminal A, luminal B, HER2 expressing, basal-like and null type according to their hormonal status with cerbB2, CK 5/6 and EGFR expressions...

An 80 year-old female presented with ductal breast carcinoma (stage II) three years ago, complained of asthenia and iron-deficiency anemia. No diagnosis was obtained after conventional endoscopy and iron supplements were indicated. Ten months later visible digestive hemorrhage was presented. Upper and lower endoscopy was repeated but non-diagnosis was obtained. Thus, video capsule endoscopy was indicated identifying a stenotic lesion arising in the mucosa of distal jejunum. Histopathological examination revealed a poorly mucinous differentiated signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma with an intense peri-tumoral lymphoid (Crohn´s-like lymphoid reaction) and lympho-vascular infiltration with no nodal metastases (pT3N0;7ª edition TNM classification)...

Overexpression of the EVI1 oncogene is associated typically with aggressive myeloid leukemia, but is also detectable in breast carcinoma (BC) where its contributions are unexplored. Analyzing a tissue microarray of 608 BC patient specimens, we documented EVI1 overexpression in both estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) and estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) BC. Here we report prognostic relevance of EVI1 overexpression in triple-negative BC (TNBC) but not in the HER2-positive BC subset. In human breast cancer cells, EVI1 silencing reduced proliferation, apoptosis resistance and tumorigenicity, effects rescued by estrogen supplementation in ER+ BC cells...

INTRODUCTION: B-Cell Lymphoma 6 (BCL6) has an oncogenic role in tumourigenesis of various malignancies. It represses genes involved in terminal differentiation and plays complementary role with Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) in triple-negative breast cancer cellular function. AIM: To evaluate the expression of BCL6 in cancer breast and determine its correlation with the clinico-pathological features including the molecular subtype of breast carcinoma...

Lymphoma is a rare malignancy of the breast, comprising approximately 0.04 to 0.5% of breast malignancies. Because the clinical findings of breast lymphoma are nonspecific and similar to those of breast carcinoma, it is important to distinguish breast lymphoma from other breast disease on the basis of radiologic findings. Elastography is an interesting imaging tool that reflects the tissue stiffness, increasingly being used in the evaluation of breast tumours. However, only a limited number of studies have focused on the elastographic findings of breast lymphoma...

BACKGROUND: The recent investigations have rendered microRNAs (miRs) as a novel biomarker in cancer research. In fact, alteration in miR expression may be associated with tumor suppression, tumorigenesis, metastasis, and poor prognosis in human breast cancer (BC). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this clinical experimental study was to measure the miR-328 expression level in breast cancer tissues, at first. Then, we tried to find out any possible correlation between miR-328 and prognostic and predictive biomarkers in BC...

BACKGROUND: Detection of vascular invasion by hematoxylin and eosin staining is the current pathological assessment practice to diagnose breast carcinoma. However, conventional hematoxylin and eosin staining failed to distinguish between blood vessel invasion and lymphatic vessel invasion. Both are important prognostic criteria however with different outcomes. The aim of this study is to distinguish between blood vessel invasion and lymphatic vessel invasion using conventional assessment and immunohistochemical markers...

The incidence of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her-2) mutations in lung adenocarcinoma is approximately 3%; however, its significance in the management of these lung cancers remains under investigation. We describe an incidental but unique opportunity to evaluate the response to treatment with herceptin in a patient with bilateral synchronous lung primaries in conjunction with breast carcinoma. Interval imaging following surgical resection of the squamous cell carcinoma while on herceptin treatment delineated the radiological regression of the Her-2 positive lung adenocarcinoma...

Tumor expression of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is associated with immune evasion in a variety of malignancies, including a subset of triple-negative breast carcinomas, and may mark cancers as susceptible to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor therapies. We herein characterize PD-L1 expression in breast cancers across the full range of histomorphologies and investigate its intratumoral heterogeneity and fidelity across primaries and metastases. A total of 245 primary and 40 metastatic (20 nodal, 20 distant) breast carcinomas were evaluated with PD-L1 immunohistochemistry on tissue microarray...

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the Indian female population. LABC and metastatic breast cancer are the most common stages at presentation in most low-resource countries. Although the incidence of LABC has decreased significantly in countries with enhanced resources thanks to widespread education and screening programs, it remains a daily encounter for surgeons and oncologists in low-resource countries. Neoadjuvant therapy has been studied widely for the treatment of LABC and is followed by locoregional therapy...

The three-dimensional (3D) culture of cancer cells provides an environmental condition closely related to the condition in vivo. It would especially be an ideal model for the early phase of metastasis, including the detachment and invasion of cancer cells from the primary tumor. In one hand, dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ), an NF-κB inhibitor, is known to inhibit cancer progression and late phase metastasis in animal experiments. In the present research, we studied the inhibitory activity on the 3D invasion of breast carcinoma cells...

Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) catalyze protein arginine methylation and are linked to carcinogenesis and metastasis. Some members of PRMTs have been found to undergo automethylation; however, the biologic significance of this self-modification is not entirely clear. In this report, we demonstrate that R531 of PRMT7 is self-methylated, both in vitro and in vivo Automethylation of PRMT7 plays a key role in inducing the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) program and in promoting the migratory and invasive behavior of breast cancer cells...

Bisphosphonates (BPs) bind selectively to hydroxyapatite and accumulate in sites of active bone remodeling, where they inhibit bone turnover by interfering with osteoclastic recruitment, activity, and survival. For this reason, they are used in oncologic patients to prevent, decrease, and delay potentially life-threatening skeletal-related complications associated with multiple myeloma (MM) and metastasis, including hypercalcemia, pain, and pathologic fractures. Despite substantial benefits, treatment with BPs can be associated with the development of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), a pathologic condition for which pathophysiologic mechanisms are not completely defined and current criteria for prevention, diagnosis, and management are based largely on expert recommendations and guidelines...
