Thiourea derivatives have been reported to possess many biological activities, among them antiviral and antitumoral properties. As part of our continuing effort to develop new active compounds, we report the synthesis and the evaluation of new fifteen thiourea derivatives with 1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl moiety, among them a group of biologically active (1-7) also underwent cyclisation to 1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones. Molecular structure of four compounds (4, 13, 15 and 3a) was determined by an X-ray crystallography. We here report the evaluation of their cytotoxicity against human leukaemia/lymphoma- and solid tumour-derived cell lines and of their antiviral activity against HIV-1 and representatives of ssRNA and dsDNA viruses...

AIDS-related cancer diseases are malignancies with low incidence on healthy people that affect mostly subjects already immunocompromised. The connection between HIV/AIDS and these cancers has not been established yet, but a weakened immune system is certainly the main cause. We envisaged the possibility to screen a small library of compounds synthesized in our laboratory against opportunistic tumors mainly due to HIV infection like Burkitt's Lymphoma. From cellular assays and gene expression analysis we identified two promising compounds...

We present a case of intrabiliary primary B-cell lymphoma masked as a cholangiocarcinoma in an HIV-positive patient. The two entities have similar symptoms, laboratory findings, and imaging findings but require very different treatments. The case highlights the need to confirm the diagnosis by biopsy.

A 60-year-old HIV-1 infected woman on antiretroviral therapy (emtricitabine/tenofovir, and ritonavir-boosted atazanavir) developed Hodgkin's lymphoma. The patient initiated ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine) chemotherapy and presented with neutropenia and severe hypokalemia. Hypokalemia was considered as part of a proximal tubular renal dysfunction, and other causes of hypokalemia were excluded. Due to suspicion of drug--drug interactions between antiretrovirals and vinblastine, ritonavir-boosted atazanavir was switched to dolutegravir and the patient continued emtricitabine/tenofovir...

Several lines of evidence support the concept that NK cells play an important role in control of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection via cytokine secretion and cytotoxicity. IL-7 is a homeostatic cytokine with a role in T cell development, activation, proliferation, and cytokine secretion. The IL-7Rα chain [cluster of differentiation (CD)127] is expressed on NK cells, with greatest abundance on the CD56(bright)CD16(dim/-) (CD56(bright)) subset. Here, we measured CD127 expression on CD56(bright), CD56(dim)CD16(+) (CD56(dim)), or CD56(neg)CD16(+) (CD56(neg)) NK cell subsets of 25 uninfected donors (UD); 34 chronic HCV-infected, treatment-naïve; 25 HIV-infected, virally suppressed on antiretroviral therapy (ART); and 42 HCV-HIV-coinfected subjects on ART...

Conjunctival tumors encompass a broad range of diagnoses. The 3 most important malignant tumors include ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) (14%), melanoma (12%), and lymphoma (7%). Conjunctival malignancies are rarely found in children. Regarding OSSN, pre-disposing conditions include chronic solar radiation, immune deficiency (HIV), organ transplant, autoimmune conditions, xeroderma pigmentosum, and chronic exposure to cigarette smoke. OSSN is managed surgically or with topical/injection immunotherapy or chemotherapy...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the current epidemiology, management, and outcomes of primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) and highlight possible future research efforts. RECENT FINDINGS: Cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone-based chemotherapy regimens alone or in combination with immunomodulatory agents (e.g., lenalidomide), or proteasome inhibitors (e.g., bortezomib), or targeted therapies, are commonly used to treat PEL. Highly active antiretroviral therapy should be continued or initiated in patients with HIV infection...

Background: Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus (KSHV)-induced lymphoma that typically arises in body cavities of HIV-infected patients. PEL cells are often co-infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). "PEL-like" lymphoma is a KSHV-unrelated lymphoma that arises in body cavities of HIV-negative patients. "PEL-like" lymphoma is sometimes EBV positive. The derivation of PEL/"PEL-like" cells is unclear. Methods: Mesothelial cells were cultured from body cavity effusions of 23 patients...

Primary CNS lymphomas (PCNSL) are relatively rare brain tumors. Their accurate diagnosis is mainly by surgical biopsy. In addition to surgical biopsy/decompression, treatment options include high dose methotrexate/chemotherapy and radiation therapy and stem cell therapy. Due to the rarity of this disease, guidelines for PCNSL diagnosis and treatment usually form from a large series of experiences. As a tertiary referral center, we retrospectively reviewed 79 patients during a 13-year period. All patients with PCNSL underwent surgical procedures/bone marrow biopsy procedures, and diagnoses were confirmed by hematologists/neuropathologists...

With combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), the risk for HIV-infected individuals to develop a non-Hodgkin lymphoma is diminished. However, the incidence of Burkitt lymphoma (BL) remains strikingly elevated. Most BL present a t(8;14) chromosomal translocation which must take place at a time of spatial proximity between the translocation partners. The two partner genes, MYC and IGH, were found colocalized only very rarely in the nuclei of normal peripheral blood B-cells examined using 3D-FISH while circulating B-cells from HIV-infected individuals whose exhibited consistently elevated levels of MYC-IGH colocalization...

Malignant lymphomas form a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of the lymphoid tissue with different clinical courses, depending on the treatment and the prognosis. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) have been associated with an increased risk for the development of lymphoproliferative disorders. The incidence of lymphoma is associated with 60-fold increase in seropositive patients as compared to seronegative patients. The present case describes a diffuse aggressive extranodal lymphoma in a known HIV patient...

Plasmablastic lymphoma, a rare highly aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subtype, often associated with HIV infection, is a close differential diagnosis of plasmablastic myeloma. The 2 conditions may be morphologically and immunophenotypically identical. However, differentiating between the 2 conditions is critical for adequate patient management. Herein, we describe an unusual case of plasmablastic myeloma with biclonal gammopathy which was initially diagnosed as plasmablastic lymphoma based on lymph node biopsy and immunohistochemistry (IHC) results...

The association of mycosis fungoides and kaposi's sarcoma in HIV-negative patients is a rare phenomenon. The presence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) - associated with all forms of Kaposi's sarcoma - has also been recently identified in mycosis fungoides lesions. However, a causal association between HHV-8 and the onset of mycosis fungoides has not been established yet. The present case reports a patient who developed Kaposi's sarcoma lesions after a two-year UVB phototherapy to treat a mycosis fungoides. Negative immunohistochemistry staining for Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus in the initial mycosis fungoides lesions strengthens the absence of a link between Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and mycosis fungoides...

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of HIV associated lymphoma is challenging because the definitive diagnostic procedure of biopsy, requires skills and equipment that are not readily available. As a consequence, diagnosis may be delayed increasing the risk of mortality. We set out to determine the frequency and risk factors associated with the misdiagnosis of HIV associated lymphoma as tuberculosis (TB) among patients attending the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study design was used among HIV patients with associated lymphoma patients attending the UCI, Kampala, Uganda between February and March 2015...
