Air-coupled ultrasonic testing (ACU) is a pioneering technique in non-destructive testing (NDT). While contact testing and fluid immersion testing are standard methods in many applications, the adoption of ACU is progressing slowly, especially in the low ultrasonic frequency range. A main reason for this development is the difficulty of generating high amplitude ultrasonic bursts with equipment that is robust enough to be applied outside a laboratory environment. This paper presents the fluidic ultrasonic transducer as a solution to this challenge...

BACKGROUND: High-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) is used in pneumological endoscopy for rigid, diagnostic, and therapeutic bronchoscopies. It is unclear to what extent the unobstructed flow of respiratory gas from the patient's lungs causes microbial contamination of the surrounding air. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After the start of the HFJV (15 min) in 16 rigid bronchoscopies, airborne pathogen measurements were taken directly at the distal endoscope outlet, at examiner height (40 cm above the endoscope outlet), at a 2 m distance from the endoscope in the room and at the supply air outlet of the examination room using an RCS air sampler...

To spectroscopically qualify strength in the π-electron conjugation, the electronic spectra of jet-cooled 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) in the region of the transition to the lowest excited singlet (S1) 1B1u state are measured by the fluorescence excitation and the single-vibronic-level dispersed fluorescence methods. Strength is defined as the difference in potential energies between the planar and perpendicular conformations. BPEB possesses two large-amplitude torsional motions, out-of-phase 24 and in-phase 29 modes...

The reclamation and reuse of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) as a bulk hazard solid waste are limited by its residual ammonia nitrogen (NH4 + -N) and manganese (Mn2+ ). This work adopts a co-processing strategy comprising air-jet milling (AJM) and horizontal-shaking leaching (HSL) for refining and leaching disposal of NH4 + -N and Mn2+ in EMR. Results indicate that the co-use of AJM and HSL could significantly enhance the leaching of NH4 + -N and Mn2+ in EMR. Under optimal milling conditions (50 Hz frequency, 10 min milling time, 12 h oscillation time, 400 rpm rate, 30 ℃ temperature, and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:30), NH4 + -N and Mn2+ leaching efficiencies were optimized to 96...

We present a conceptually simple model for understanding the significant spectral changes that occur with the temperature in the infrared spectra of hydrogen-bound complexes. We have measured room-temperature spectra of the methanol dimer and two deuterated isotopologues in the OH(D)-stretching region. We correctly predict spectral changes observed in the gas phase for the bound OH stretch in the methanol dimer from jet-cooled to room temperature and corroborate this with experimental and theoretical results for deuterated isotopologues...

The effect of pulse-modulated sub-RF range (100 kHz-1 MHz) excitation on atmospheric pressure argon plasma jet characteristics is studied. For this, a suitable power supply is developed, offering a sub-µs rise time with control of different parameters, such as voltage amplitude, pulse modulation frequency in the range of 1-30 kHz, and an oscillation frequency of ∼520 kHz, which can affect the plasma behavior. Plasma characteristics, such as reactive species generation, ionic composition, plasma plume length, and gas temperature, are evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively by employing diagnostics such as optical emission spectroscopy, molecular beam mass spectrometry, and optical imaging...

Rolling element bearings (REBs) are an essential part of rotating machinery. A localised defect in a REB typically results in periodic impulses in vibration signals at bearing characteristic frequencies (BCFs), and these are widely used for bearing fault detection and diagnosis. One of the most powerful methods for BCF detection in noisy signals is envelope analysis. However, the selection of an effective band-pass filtering region presents significant challenges in moving towards automated bearing fault diagnosis due to the variable nature of the resonant frequencies present in bearing systems and rotating machinery...

Jet noise is a common problem in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) technology. This should be given great attention because of its serious impacts on the physical and mental health of the operators. In this study, a micro-grooved nozzle is proposed based on the noise reduction concept of biological micro-grooves. The flow field and acoustic characteristics of an original nozzle and a micro-grooved nozzle were investigated numerically to help better understand the noise reduction mechanism. The reasons for noise generation and the effects of the length ( L ), width ( W ) and depth ( δ ) of the micro-grooves on noise reduction were analyzed...

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) produce x-ray pulses with high brilliance and short pulse duration. These properties enable structural investigations of biomolecular nanocrystals, and they allow one to resolve the dynamics of biomolecules down to the femtosecond timescale. Liquid jets are widely used to deliver samples into the XFEL beam. The impact of the x-ray pulse leads to vaporization and explosion of the liquid jet, while the expanding gas triggers the formation of shock wave trains traveling along the jet, which may affect biomolecular samples before they have been probed...
