BACKGROUND: Carcinoma gall bladder accounts for 98% of all the gall bladder malignancies and is the sixth most common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract worldwide. Incidental gall bladder carcinoma (IGBC) is an incidental finding of carcinoma diagnosed during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy or on histopathological examination of gall bladder specimen removed for benign gall bladder diseases. The incidence of IGBC is around 0.19 - 3.3% in the literature. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to report our experience with gall bladder cancers which were incidentally diagnosed during histopathological examination of cholecystectomy specimens done for benign gall bladder disease and follow up of the cases...

Carcinoma of gall bladder is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract worldwide and is usually associated with poor prognosis. In this era of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, there has been increase in detection of early stage incidental gall bladder carcinoma in cholecystectomy specimens. A retrospective study was carried out in tertiary care hospital in central India. A total of 2990 patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy during the year 2001-2013. Hospital records and histopathology reports of these patients were studied in detail...

BACKGROUND: The objectives of the study were to: 1) determine the frequency of incidental malignancy in unsuspected/grossly normal looking gall bladders; 2) determine the frequency of malignancy in suspected/grossly abnormal looking gall bladders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, cross sectional study was carried out at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan, during a four year period (Jan 2009-dec2012). All the cholecystectomy cases performed for gallstone diseases were examined initially by a surgeon and later on by a pathologist for macroscopic abnormalities and accordingly assigned to one of the three categories i...

Malignancies of the biliary tract include cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancers and carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. Biliary tract adenocarcinomas are the second most common primary hepatobiliary cancer. Due to their slow growing nature, non-specific and late symptomatology, these malignancies are often diagnosed in advanced stages with poor prognosis. Apart from incidental discovery of gall bladder carcinoma upon cholecystectomy, early stage biliary tract cancers are now detected with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)...

The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of carcinoma gall bladder in cases of acute and chronic cholecystitis particularly with reference to cholelithiasis. Lymphatic filariasis is endemic in India and South-East Asia. Detection of microfilaria is infrequently reported during cytological evaluation of various lesions or body cavity fluids. Microfilariae in cytological smears of few benign and malignant neoplasms have also been reported. Here we present a very rare case of presence of microfilariae in a smear from ultrasound guided fine-needle aspiration of gallbladder adenocarcinoma. The present patient is probably the second reported case in the literature harboring occult filariasis in association with gallbladder carcinoma...

Gall bladder diseases are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Gall bladder diseases comprise a wide spectrum of disease entities including non specific inflammatory diseases, acute and chronic cholecystitis, follicular cholecystitis, granulomatous cholecystitis, metaplasic and dysplastic diseases of the gall bladder mucosa, gall bladder polyps and carcinomas. Here, we describe an unusual and a rare case of granulomatous vasculitis of the gall bladder incidentally diagnosed in a 38-year-old female, in a routine cholecystectomy specimen...

The presence of ectopic liver tissue has been reported in various abdominal and extra-abdominal sites, most often in the gall bladder. Other rare sites include the retroperitoneum and the adrenal gland, which are anatomically closer to the kidney. However, our literature search did not reveal any reports of ectopic liver tissue within the kidney. We present such a case, detected incidentally during a fetal autopsy histologic examination, and we review the possible developmental aspects causing it. Ectopic liver is usually asymptomatic, although it can carry pathology similar to the orthotopic liver...

BACKGROUND: Selective approach for sending cholecystectomy specimens for histopathology results in missing discrete pathologies such as premalignant benign lesions such as porcelain gallbladder, carcinoma-in-situ, and early carcinomas. To avoid such blunders therefore, every cholecystectomy specimen should be routinely examined histologically. Unfortunately, the practice of discarding gallbladder specimen is standard in most tertiary care hospitals of Pakistan including the primary investigators' own institution...

Gall bladder carcinoma is the most common cancer of biliary tree, characterized by rapid progression and a very high mortality rate. Detection at an early stage, however, is indicative of a very good prognosis and prolonged survival. The practice of histopathological examination of gall bladder specimens removed for clinically benign conditions and its usefulness has been a subject of controversy. The present prospective study was carried out over a period of four years in order to find out the incidence of unsuspected gallbladder carcinoma in cholecystectomy specimens received in our histopathology laboratory and to analyze their clinico-pathological features...

Gall bladder malignancy predominantly comprises adenocarcinoma and is found mostly in a late stage whereas primary lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) within the gall bladder is exceedingly rare and has an incidental presentation. We report a case of well differentiated adenocarcinoma with MALT lymphoma of the gall bladder in an 83 year old woman. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a carcinoma and lymphoma occurring simultaneously in the gall bladder.

Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is the commonest cancer of the biliary tree and the most frequent cause of death from biliary malignancies. The incidence of GBC shows prominent geographic, age, race, and gender-related differences and is 4-7 times higher in patients with gallstones. This prompted us to study the clinicopathological aspects of the disease and the incidence of gallstones in gallbladder carcinoma patients, in this part of India. In this, combined retrospective (Jan 2004-March 2010) and prospective study (April 2010-Dec 2011) of eight years, 198 patients of gallbladder carcinoma (50 males and 148 females), (range 28-82 years; mean 55 years) were studied...

Rarely, it may present with multiple cavitary metastatic lesions in the pulmonary parenchyma. Ectopic livers are infrequently reported in the literature. The reported size for ectopic livers range from a few millimeters up to several centimeters. They are often clinically silent and incidentally discovered during imaging of the hepatobiliary tract, regional surgical procedures or autopsy. They are predestined for benign liver diseases otherwise observed in normal livers like fatty change or develop malignancies such as hepatocellular carcinoma, in a manner analogous to the parent orthotopic liver. The presence of abnormal alpha 1-antitrypsin retention in an ectopic liver has, to our knowledge, not been reported in the literature...

Over the past decade considerable progress has been made in several fields relating to the diagnosis and treatment of gall bladder cancer. This literature search evaluates if these recent advances have led to improved diagnosis, treatment and survival of patients with gall bladder carcinoma. The increase in the number of cholecystectomies being carried out has resulted in more carcinomas being discovered incidentally, and at an early and treatable stage. The combination of ultrasound and MRI yields the most accurate preoperative staging...
