IMPORTANCE: The frequent occurrence of cognitive symptoms in post-COVID-19 condition has been described, but the nature of these symptoms and their demographic and functional factors are not well characterized in generalizable populations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of self-reported cognitive symptoms in post-COVID-19 condition, in comparison with individuals with prior acute SARS-CoV-2 infection who did not develop post-COVID-19 condition, and their association with other individual features, including depressive symptoms and functional status...

Low glyphosate doses that produce hormesis may alter the susceptibility to herbicides of weeds or enhance their propagation and dispersal. The objective of this work was to evaluate the hormetic effects of glyphosate on the vegetative, phenological and reproductive development in resistant (R) and susceptible (S) Conyza sumatrensis biotypes. The glyphosate resistance level of biotype R was 11.2-fold compared to the S biotype. Glyphosate doses <11.25 g ae ha-1 induced temporary and permanent hormetic effects for the number of leaves, plant height and dry mass accumulation up to 28 d after application in both R and S biotypes...

BACKGROUND: The gender gap in the authorship of scientific research may affect career advancement. Our aim was to assess the potential gender gap in gastrointestinal (GI) journals. METHODS: A systematic review was performed of the GI literature and ongoing research in the period 2020-2022. A total 10 GI journals and ongoing research on clinicaltrials.gov were selected for review. The gender gap in first and senior authorship was evaluated for each article and ongoing research project...

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on the relationship between the traditional Chinese medicine constitution (TCMC) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in older populations. We sought to investigate the distribution of MAFLD and the TCMC in older people, and provide a theoretical basis for TCMC-based management of MAFLD in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among older (≥65 years) individuals in Zhongshan, China...

Evolution depends upon genetic variations that influence physiology. As defined in a genetic screen, phenotypic performance may be enhanced or degraded by such mutations. We set out to detect mutations that influence motor function, including motor learning. Thus, we tested the motor effects of 36,444 non-synonymous coding/splicing mutations induced in the germline of C57BL/6J mice with N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea by measuring changes in the performance of repetitive rotarod trials while blinded to genotype. Automated meiotic mapping was used to implicate individual mutations in causation...

As the diagnosis performance of absolute quantification of myocardial blood flow (MBF) and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) by single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) has been proven, its prognostic value in patients with intermediate coronary stenosis remains to be evaluated. METHODS: Patients with one or more target lesions of ≥ 50% to ≤ 80% diameter stenoses on invasive coronary angiography were prospectively included in this study...

Improving the sulfur content in the cathode is essential for achieving high-energy-density all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs). However, the complex multiinterfaces, akin to the short wooden planks that consist of the cask, severely limit the performance of ASSLSBs with high sulfur content. Since singular approaches fail to optimize these interfaces simultaneously, we propose a synergistic approach using a dual-doped sulfide solid electrolyte (Y2 S3 and LiI) and an SbSn alloy sulfur host in this work...

Recently, there has been a surge of interest in the application of radiation-shielding materials. One promising research avenue involves using free-lead metal oxides/polymer composites, which have been studied for their radiation shielding and characterization properties. This study reinforced the dimethylpolysiloxane (silicone rubber) composites with micro- and nano-sized particles of tin oxide, cadmium oxide, and bismuth oxide as additive materials. The composites were tested with 20 and 50 weight fractions, and their attenuation coefficients were measured using a NaI(TI) detector at gamma-ray energies ranging from 59...

A tracheostomy is usually necessary for long-term mechanical ventilation or complicated weaning. Other indications include swallowing disorders with recurrent aspiration in neuromuscular disease and high-grade subglottic stenosis. The tracheostomy can be performed as a percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy or as a surgical tracheostomy. The complication rate is low, and intraoperative complications are differentiated from early and late postoperative complications. This article aims to present the indications, the techniques and complications of percutaneous dilatational and surgical tracheostomy, and highlights the long-term complications of tracheal stenosis and tracheomalacia...

Sleep benefits motor memory consolidation, which is mediated by sleep spindle activity and associated memory reactivations during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. However, the particular role of NREM2 and NREM3 sleep spindles and the mechanisms triggering this memory consolidation process remain unclear. Here, simultaneous electroencephalographic and functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) recordings were collected during night-time sleep following the learning of a motor sequence task. Adopting a time-based clustering approach, we provide evidence that spindles iteratively occur within clustered and temporally organized patterns during both NREM2 and NREM3 sleep...

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer has a high case fatality and relatively short survival after diagnosis. Treatment is paramount to improving survival, but studies on the effects of standard treatment by surgery or chemotherapy on survival in U.S. healthcare settings is limited. Further, variability in access to care may impact treatment and outcomes for patients. We aimed to assess the relationship between standard treatment(s) and survival of pancreatic adenocarcinoma in a population with access to comprehensive healthcare...

OBJECTIVE: Increasing healthcare expenditures require governments to make difficult prioritization decisions. Considering public preferences can help raise citizens' support. Previous research has predominantly elicited preferences for the allocation of public resources towards specific treatments or patient groups and principles for resource allocation. This study contributes by examining public preferences for budget allocation over various healthcare purposes in the Netherlands. METHODS: We conducted a Participatory Value Evaluation (PVE) choice experiment in which 1408 respondents were asked to allocate a hypothetical budget over eight healthcare purposes: general practice and other easily accessible healthcare, hospital care, elderly care, disability care, mental healthcare, preventive care by encouragement, preventive care by discouragement, and new and better medicines...

The prolonged course of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitates sustained surveillance of emerging variants. This study aimed to develop a multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) suitable for the real-time tracking of Omicron subvariants in clinical and wastewater samples. Plasmids containing variant-specific mutations were used to develop a MeltArray assay. After a comprehensive evaluation of both analytical and clinical performance, the established assay was used to detect Omicron variants in clinical and wastewater samples, and the results were compared with those of next-generation sequencing (NGS) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR)...
