Thyroid cancer is the leading endocrine system tumor. Great advances have recently been made in understanding of the origin of these tumors and the molecular biology that makes them grow and proliferate, which have been associated to improvements in diagnostic procedures and increased availability of effective local and systemic treatments. All of the above makes thyroid cancer a paradigm of how different specialties should work together to achieve the greatest benefit for the patients. Coordination of all the procedures and patient flows should continue throughout diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, and is essential for further optimization of resources and time...

INTRODUCTION: The consortium for the study of thyroid cancer (CECaT), including 20 hospitals and one research institute, was recently created in Catalonia (Spain). One of the first initiatives of the group was to perform a descriptive analysis of the characteristics of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The cohort included 1,855 patients from 11 hospitals treated over a period of 15 years (1998-2012). RESULTS: In this series, 1...

Incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing in Spain and worldwide. Overall thyroid cancer survival is very high, and stratification systems to reliably identify patients with worse prognosis have been developed. However, marked differences exist between the different specialists in clinical management of low-risk patients with thyroid carcinoma. Almost half of all papillary thyroid carcinomas are microcarcinomas, and 90% are tumors < 2 cm that have a particularly good prognosis. However, they are usually treated more aggressively than needed, despite the lack of adequate scientific support...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the approaches of specialists in Spain to patients with thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid carcinoma and to compare them with the American guideline and European consensus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study based on a questionnaire addressed to clinical endocrinologists specialized in thyroid cancer and specialists in nuclear medicine throughout Spain. RESULTS: A total of 177 questionnaires were completed, representing an overall response rate of 85%; 74% of responses were from endocrinologists and 24% from physicians active in nuclear medicine; 82% of respondents worked in third-level hospitals, 10% in second level hospitals and the remainder in private practice...

A case of idiopathic unilateral (left) idiopatic basal ganglia calcification with associated extrapiramidal controlateral symptoms is described. The patient, a 20 years old man, showed since childhood a progressive motor impairment of his right limbs more obvious in his arms. Neurological examination showed hypertonia, distonia, motor and other extrapiramidal impairments of his right limbs. Skull X Ray and CT scan revealed left basal ganglia calcification. Laboratory investigations excluded all the common diseases with basal ganglia calcifications: tumors, tiroid and paratiroid disorders, parassites, vascular, inflammatory or degenerative diseases...
